Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. - After a rocky start to the day, the UWG baseball program rebounded nicely in the second game against Union on Friday afternoon. The Wolves lost game one 4-3, but came back with an 8-5 victory in Game 2.
Junior first baseman
Brody Wortham was 4-for-8 on the day, getting a hit in both games to extend his remarkable hitting streak to 30 games.
Game 1 - Union 4, UWG 3
In game one,
Robert Coleman got the nod on the bump, going six innings, allowing six hits, four runs, two walks, and five strikeouts.
Union would get the scoring started in the second inning, thanks to an RBI double by Billy Beckham, giving the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.
The Wolves started the third inning strong, thanks to back-to-back singles by
Anthony Calabro and
Cody Mish.
Brody Wortham was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out in the inning, but Union pitcher Luke Williamson retired three consecutive Wolves batters to strand the bases loaded and leave the score at a one run game.
In the bottom half of the third inning, Patrick Music extended the Bulldogs lead to two runs after an opposite field home run.
The long ball continued to work for Union, as Josh Bozoian and Blake Barnett hit back to back home runs in the bottom of the fourth to give Union a 4-0 lead.
Collin Moore got the Wolves on the board in the top of the fifth with a home run to dead center field, making the score 4-1, his second homer of the season.
The first reliever out of the bullpen for the Wolves was Dominic Murgo III in the bottom of the seventh inning. Murgo pitched a clean seventh inning, only allowing one hit in the inning. Murgo finished with 2.0 innings pitched, allowing just two hits, no runs, no walks, and one strikeout.
In the ninth,
Jonathan Logsdon led off the inning with a single, followed by a double into the left-center gap by Calabro.
Brody Wortham would dig in with one out and deliver a two RBI double down the third base line to cut the deficit to one.
Collin Moore was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second for
Sam Ladner, who hit a ground ball to the shortstop, and Moore would be called for interference on his slide into second, ending the game with a final score of 4-3.
Game 2 - UWG vs. Union
The Wolves continued the momentum from the top of the 9th in Game 1 into Game 2, putting two runners on in the top of the first, but a clutch hit escaped UWG in the inning, as the runners were stranded. Union took full advantage with a leadoff triple followed by a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
UWG starter
Jack Rasmussen settled down after that, allowing next to nothing until the bottom of the fifth. That allowed the Wolves to score six runs in that span, starting with four in the top of the third.
Collin Moore and
Sam Ladner opened the top of the fourth inning with back-to-back walks, then executed a perfect double-steal to put two runners in scoring position with no outs.
Fuzzy Furr didn't need it, as the senior belted a double over the right fielder's head to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning,
Anthony Calabro launched his second home run of the season, a no-doubter to left field to extend the lead to 4-1.
Furr opened up another two-run rally in the top of the fourth when he was hit by a pitch.
Jackson Webb followed with a walk and the pair moved up with Calabro was also hit by a pitch.
Edgar Cruz then singled home both Furr and Webb to push the lead to 6-1.
Union struck back in the bottom of the fifth, drawing a leadoff walk off of Rasmussen. Later in the inning, a double scored two runs followed by a wild pitch to make it 6-4. Head coach
Jeff Smith then brought in
Ezra Brown, who allowed a single before getting back-to-back outs to get out of the jam with a 6-5 lead. The Wolves responded in the top of the sixth as Calabro picked up his third RBI of the game with a single, scoring Webb and pushing the lead out to 7-5.
Brown struck out two batters in the bottom of the sixth, but allowed two runners on and Smith decided to bring in
Ronny Piepmeier to close the door. Piepmeier walked the first batter, then settled down and induced a fly ball to end the sixth with a 7-5 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Cruz stayed hot with a single to lead off the inning, then moved over on a groundout from Mish.
Brody Wortham then extended his hitting streak to 30 games with a single to left, scoring Cruz to give the Wolves another cushion at 8-5. In the bottom of the inning, Piepmeier walked the leadoff batter, but a double play erased that walk and a fly out to right ended the game.
Furr was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and two RBI along with a walk in the game. Cruz was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored while Calabro was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Rasmussen went 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with three strikeouts to get the win. Brown allowed two hits in 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and Piepmeier picked up his third save of the season with 1.1 innings pitched to close it out.
The same two teams will be back in action on Saturday afternoon in Jackson, Tenn., with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
