Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia Baseball added another tally in the win column with an 11-6 victory over the Emmanuel Lions on Tuesday afternoon.
Jenson Barker made the start on the mound for the Wolves, going three innings, allowing three runs, four hits, zero walks, and four strikeouts.
"I thought Jenson threw the ball well. We've been working on secondary pitch command, and he did what he needed to do. During midweek games, we try to get a lot of guys out there to get them set up for the weekend, and I was pleased at how he pitched" said head coach
Jeff Smith.
After Barker struck out the side in the top of the first,
Collin Moore got the Wolves on the board in the bottom half with a sac fly, scoring
Sam Ladner who singled earlier in the inning.
In the top of the second inning, Emmanuel (16-23, 8-13 CC) got on the board with two runs of their own. After leading off the inning with a single and a double, Emmanuel would get a sac fly and an RBI groundout to put them up 2-1.
In the bottom half of the same inning, the Wolves (19-15, 9-11 GSC) would strike again. After
Anthony Calabro was hit by a pitch,
Logan Fink put down a sac bunt and the Lions threw the ball away, bringing home Calabro.
Charlie Tull and
Davis Schwartz followed with RBI singles, making the score 4-2 after two innings.
The Lions got right back on the board in the third inning after Luke Patty led off with a triple, and scored on a groundout in the very next at bat.
Not to be outdone, the Wolves also got on the board in the third, adding a run of their own.
Collin Moore got things started with a one out double, followed by an RBI single from
Fuzzy Furr, making the score 5-3 after three.
In the fourth inning,
Nick Morgan would get the call from the bullpen. He came in and threw a scoreless top of the fourth, and finished with just the one inning pitched, striking out two batters.
"This past weekend we only walked about four guys in three games, and then today we walked two, so I'm pleased. We talk about forcing contact, location, and command, and they did what we asked of them" said Smith.
During the home half of the fourth, the Wolves would add three more thanks to the bat of
Sam Ladner, pushing the lead to 8-3 through four innings.
Emmanuel got back on the scoreboard in the fifth, on an RBI single from Minnis, trimming the lead to 8-4.
The Wolves scored for the fifth straight inning as
Charlie Tull sent a ball out of the yard in the fifth, extending the lead to 10-4
In the seventh, Emmanuel got back on the board after a few free passes and a wild pitch, an infield single brought home a run. Another run came from a sac fly, making the score 10-6 heading to the bottom of the seventh.
In the home half of the seventh,
Anthony Calabro got the Wolves back on the board with a solo homer run to dead center field, pushing the lead back up to 11-6.
"We were aggressive in the batter's box. We scored in six of the eight innings we got to hit in, and that's what we're looking for. When we get guys on, we want to be aggressive at the plate and move the baseball around to get guys in" said Smith.
With nothing doing for either side in the eighth,
Jackson Hodnick was sent in to close the door in the ninth for the Wolves. He sat the Lions down in order, securing the 11-6 victory.
"We're trying to keep the momentum rolling. We're playing well, and we have 12 games left in the conference, and what we have to do is keep playing. This team has to believe that they're good, and believe in themselves. When we do that we play well, and it's going to be a good series in Huntsville." said Smith.
The Wolves are back in action this Friday and Saturday when they travel to Huntsville, AL to take on the Alabama Huntsville Chargers. First pitch for Friday is set for 6p.m. EST with the double header on Saturday set to begin at 3p.m. EST.
