Baseball Drops Both Sides of DH with UAH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. -  West Georgia Baseball dropped both games of a double header with the Alabama Huntsville Chargers on Friday afternoon.

Game One
Jonathan Hickman got the start for the Wolves in game one. It was a rough outing for the Junior right hander, as he pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits.

West Georgia threatened in the top of the first, but left two runners stranded, sending us to the bottom half where the Chargers struck first courtesy of a two-out RBI single from Carson Villalta.

UWG couldn't respond in the top of the second as they went down 1-2-3 to send us to the bottom half where the Chargers broke the game open. Alabama Huntsville started their half of the inning with a lead-off double, putting pressure on Hickman early in the inning. A balk, two singles, and a two-run home run followed the lead-off double, extending the Chargers lead to 5-0.

Coach Jeff Smith had seen enough and made his first call to the bullpen, bringing in Jack Rasmussen to relieve Hickman. Rasmussen retired the final batter in the bottom of the second to send us to the third.

Brody Wortham got West Georgia started in the top of the third with a lead-off single which was followed by Walks from Sam Ladner and Collin Moore that loaded up the bases for Fuzzy Furr. With two outs in the inning, Furr went down swinging, ending the Wolves rally in the third.

Alabama Huntsville quickly loaded the bases without surrendering an out in their half of the fourth. An RBI-single, a hit by pitch, and a sacrifice fly would tack on three more runs for UAH to extend their lead to 8-0 as we went to the fourth.

After being held scoreless for five innings, the bats came alive in the sixth for UWG, beginning with a two-run single from Logan Fink that drove in Anthony Calabro and Furr to cut the deficit to 8-2. Sam Ladner kept the line moving, as he followed up Fink's two-run single with a two-run single of his own, making it an 8-4 game and bringing Jonathan Logsdon to the plate for another RBI opportunity. Logsdon delivered as the Junior ripped a double to left center, driving in Ladner and Wortham to cap off a six-run inning for the Wolves.

After surrendering a lead-off double, coach Smith made his second call to the bullpen, bringing in Dominic Murgo to relieve Rasmussen who went 3 1/3 innings. Murgo did his job, retiring the only batter he faced. With a runner on third and a left-handed batter coming up to the plate, coach Smith called in lefty Ezra Brown from the bullpen to get the last out of the inning. UAH scored the runner from third after a balk from Brown, but that's all they would get in the inning as the junior lefty sat down the next batter on strikes.

After a scoreless top of the seventh for West Georgia, Alabama Huntsville added three more runs in their half of the inning thanks to a two-run single and an error from the Wolves, extending their lead to 12-6.

We fast-forward to the ninth where UWG found themselves down to their last three outs, facing a six-run deficit.

The Wolves were able to push a run across in the ninth after Logan Fink picked up his third RBI of the game courtesy of an RBI-single, but that's all West Georgia would get in the inning, as the Wolves dropped game one, 12-7.

Game Two
After a tough loss in game one, Jeff Smith would turn to his ace, Robert Coleman in game two. Coleman went 2.1 innings, giving up six runs, four earned runs, five hits, two walks, and only one strikeout.

Alabama Huntsville got on the board first in the first inning, pushing across two runs on just one hit, putting the Chargers ahead early 3-0.

The Wolves were held to just one hit the first time through the line up, which came from the bat of Jonathan Logsdon in the top of the first inning.

The Chargers added on in the third inning after a lead off double came around to score after a sac bunt and a single. Coleman was unable to finish the inning, and Jackson Hodnick was called out of the bullpen. After two more singles, a few free passes, including two hit by pitches and a throwing error, and two pitching changes, the Chargers pushed their lead to 11-0 after three innings.

Alabama Huntsville got back in the scoring column again in the fifth inning after a two run home run by Ezzell, making the lead 13-0 at the end of the fifth.

Another ball left the yard for the Chargers in the sixth, making the score 14-0 with one inning left in the game.

In the top of the seventh, the Wolves finally got on the board when Edgar Cruz sent a single into left field and a misplay allowed Logan Fink to come around and score. That was all the Wolves would get as they dropped game two of the double header.

The series will wrap up with a single game tomorrow beginning at 1p.m. EST.
