Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - Baseballs were flying out of the park at Cole Field on Friday evening as the West Georgia Wolves pounded out a school-record seven home runs in a 16-2 win over Mississippi College in Gulf South Conference play.
The Wolves came one home run short of a Gulf South Conference record for home runs in a single game, setting a school record in the process with seven home runs in the contest.
Ezra Brown went the route in the run-rule game, allowing two runs on six hits. The win puts UWG at 21-18 overall on the year and 10-14 against GSC competition as the Wolves look to get back to the Gulf South Conference tournament. The loss for Mississippi College drops the Choctaws to 7-18 in league play, eliminating them from tournament contention.
"We stressed this week that the guys just needed to play the game, not the opponent," said head coach
Jeff Smith. "We had a good day swinging the bats on Tuesday at Georgia College and continued that today. Put that with a fantastic performance from
Ezra Brown on the mound and it was a good start to the weekend."
Brown had his best performance as a UWG pitcher, tossing his first complete game. He has led the team in appearances over the last two years, as Friday was his 33rd appearance in that span. He went the route, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out three for his second victory of the season.
"Coach Smith really allowed me to work with his pitch calling to go out there and I just tried to let them put it in play and make it happen," said Brown. "The defense was huge and the plays they were making just allowed me to come in and throw strikes and not worry about the result because I knew they would be there."
Mississippi College touched up UWG starter
Ezra Brown for two runs on a pair of two-out hits in the top of the first, but the score didn't stay for long, as
Collin Moore blasted his sixth home run of the season down the left field line in the bottom of the inning. The homer was a two-run shot, scoring
Davis Schwartz as the Wolves tied the score at 2-2.
Brown settled down after that, holding the Choctaws scoreless over the next two innings, giving his offense a chance to put a few runs across. In the bottom of the third,
Jackson Webb led off the inning with a double down the left field line, then he came home for the third run of the game for the Wolves on a single from
Davis Schwartz. Moore then gave the Wolves a three-run lead, belting his second homer of the game with a blast off the scoreboard for a 5-2 advantage.
"I saw it well and didn't try to do too much, but our backs were against the wall so I tried to do a little small ball and it worked out well," said Moore. "We worked very hard this week and when one starts clicking, another catches on and things just roll from there."
The hit parade continued in the bottom of the fourth after Brown held MC scoreless for a third consecutive inning, as the Wolves put another run on the board with a homer to right-center from
Anthony Calabro, his sixth of the season. That open the floodgates for a monster inning for the Wolves. Twelve batters went to the plate in the inning, delivering on five extra-base hits, including three home runs that led to eight runs in the frame. Calabro homered twice in the inning, sandwiching a two-run blast from Schwartz as the Wolves moved to the fifth with a 13-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, the Wolves added three more runs on home runs, with
Fuzzy Furr leading off the bottom of the fifth with a blast to right center and
Logan Fink delivering on a two-run shot to left field in the bottom of the sixth.
West Georgia returns to action on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Choctaws in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Senior Day ceremonies will begin at Cole Field at 12:45 p.m.
