Wolves Set to Open Home Schedule Against Two Non-Conference Opponents

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia men's basketball team are set to open up their home schedule on Saturday as the Wolves welcome the Fort Valley State Wildcats for a 4:00 p.m contest before hosting the Point University Skyhawks on Monday at 7:00 p.m.

UWG (2-0) enters Saturday's home opener after a perfect 2-0 weekend at the South Region crossover, with wins coming over Embry-Riddle and Palm Beach Atlantic. Fort Valley State (0-2) comes into the weekend after dropping their first two games by a combined seven points, with losses coming to Valdosta State and West Florida, while Point (5-2) enters after a 78-69 loss to Life on Wednesday.

"It's nice to be back at home," said head coach Dave Moore. "We have to play well at home. You have a good season by taking care of business at home and stealing a few on the road. Our home-court advantage needs to be an advantage and that happens with our energy, our focus, and how we play and that's been the focus this week."

Preseason All-GSC selection Zawdie Jackson kicked off the 2023-24 season right where he left off last season as the guard was named the GSC Player of the Week after averaging 22 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in West Georgia wins over the Falcons and Sailfish last weekend. Jackson led a UWG offense that scored over 80 points in both games, with Jackson recording a game-high 28 points against Palm Beach Atlantic, eight points shy of tying his career-high.

Alongside Jackson, Camron Donatlan shined on opening weekend as the Junior averaged 21 points per game, scoring 23 points against the Sailfish and 19 points against the Eagles. Donatlan missed a portion of last year's season with a knee injury but towards the end of the season, began to look more like himself and has brought that momentum into the new season, making the junior guard the clear second-option in the Wolves' offense.

Jackson and Donatlan lead West Georgia offensively and are surrounded by shooters in Cole Fisher and stretch-four Kolten Griffin. At times in 2022-23, the Wolves struggled to shoot the three ball, finishing last season with a 34% percentage, but Fisher and Griffin seem to be spearheading a turnaround in that category as the duo combined for 10 threes over the weekend, leading to a 38.2% team percentage.

Fort Valley State is led by Myson Lowe who leads the Wildcats in scoring after opening weekend. Lowe is a 5'10" three-level scoring guard who began his 2023-24 campaign with a 14-point performance against Valdosta State before dropping a game-high 24 points on 8-20 shooting and 5-10 from three against West Florida.

As for Point, they are led by guard Jacob Crockett and forward Joshua Scott. Crockett and Scott are tied for the team lead in scoring with 10.6 points per game while Scott also ranks second on the Skyhawks in rebounding with 5.7 boards per game. Scott also has a soft touch around the rim, leading to a 70% field goal percentage through seven games.

Tip-off for Saturday's home opener against Fort Valley State is set for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, while Monday's matchup against Point is set for 7:00 p.m.
