Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. - The final regular season road game for UWG Baseball did not go as planned, dropping game three to the Delta State Statesmen 9-0 on Sunday afternoon.
After sitting down the Wolves (30-14, 16-11 GSC) in order in the first, Delta State (23-23, 13-14 GSC) went right to work on offense, scoring seven times in the opening frame to take a 7-0 lead into the second.
Jackson Webb tallied UWG's first hit in the top of the third, and the Wolves did load the bases in the inning, but could not cash in a run and continued to trail 7-0.
Bay Witcher, who relieved
Carson Crossley in the fourth, retired 10 straight DSU batters through the bottom of the fourth, keeping the deficit the same and giving the Wolves a chance to climb back into the game.
The Statesmen struck again in the sixth, scoring twice off of Witcher and ending his afternoon as head coach
Jeff Smith went to
Andrew Smith out of the bullpen. Despite the runs in the sixth, Witcher kept DSU at bay, throwing five innings, allowing just four hits and two runs but struck out three.
In the seventh, the Wolves loaded the bases once again, all on free passes, but a groundout from
Anthony Calabro ended the threat.
Both sides were held in check in the eighth, and in the ninth, the Wolves were sat down in order to end the game.
UWG only mustered three hits in the ballgame and left 10 runners on base in the losing effort. Following Witcher on the mound, Smith and
Jake Jordan threw 2.1 innings allowing no hits or runs.
The Wolves are back in action on Wednesday as they welcome in the Georgia College and State Bobcats for their final midweek contest.
