19th Ranked Wolves Extend Win Streak to Five with Win over Choctaws

Box Score CLINTON, Miss. – The University of West Georgia Men's Basketball team extended their winning streak to five on Saturday after a 77-71 win over the Mississippi College Choctaws.

UWG (14-2, 10-2 GSC) shot 55% from the field and held Mississippi College (7-7, 6-5 GSC) to 37% from the floor, all while dominating the paint. The Wolves recorded 40 points in the paint compared to the Choctaws' 18 points in the paint, leading to their fourth win a one week.

"We got out to a really good start and then to Mississippi College's credit, they battled back," said head coach Dave Moore. "In the second half we made some adjustments defensively by going zone and the zone ended up saving us. It made them stand around a little bit more and made it easier for us to contest shots."

West Georgia got out to a 11-0 lead just three minutes into the game after four quick buckets from Amari Davis and a three from Zawdie Jackson. After a sluggish start for Mississippi College, buckets from Rashad Bolden and Cam Brown woke up the Choctaws offense as they cut the Wolves lead to four with 11:46 left in the half. UWG responded to Mississippi College's run with a run of their own as a bucket from Camron Donatlan sparked a 10-0 run, giving the Wolves their largest lead of the half at 14 points. Down 30-16 with 8:18 left in the half, Bolden got hot as the guard scored 12 of his 17 first half points in the final eight minutes of the period, carrying a 16-5 MC run that cut UWG's lead to three at the break.

West Georgia shot 45.2% from the field in the first half and won the rebounding battle by five while Mississippi College shot 40.7% from the floor.

Bolden didn't cool off at halftime time as the sophomore opened the second half with back-to-back threes, giving the Choctaws their first lead of the game. At this point in the game, Mississippi College had all of the momentum and got their lead up to as many as five points before a three-point play from Jackson stopped the bleeding. While Jackson's and-one halted the Choctaws momentum, it also sparked the Wolves as West Georgia went on a 20-2 run to retake the lead at 63-50 with 10:00 left to play. For the remainder of the game, Mississippi College chipped away at UWG's lead but the Wolves were able to hang on, taking a 77-71 win back to Carrollton.

Donatlan led the way with a team-high 22 points and seven rebounds on 10-15 shooting, while Jackson finished with 21 points, four assists and two steals.

"Mississippi College is a good basketball team," coach Moore continued. "They were 5-1 at home and I'm proud of the guys for how they fought. To get four wins in a week with the travel and against the teams that we are playing, I couldn't be more proud of the guys going into the second half of the conference schedule."
West Georgia will now get a week off before returning to The Coliseum on Saturday, January 20 for a rematch with the Montevallo Falcons.
