CARROLLTON, Ga. – The UWG women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, taking on the Alabama State Hornets in a non-conference road contest at 7 p.m. ET.
West Georgia (4-4) looks to get back in the win column after an overtime setback at Western Carolina snapped a four-game winning streak in their last action. And now after a 10-day hiatus for exam week, the Wolves look to get a new streak started against Alabama State (27), who have lost seven straight games.
In six of eight games for UWG this year, it's been either senior
Zuriyah Davis or freshman
Destiny Jones who has led the Wolves in scoring. Last time out it was Jones who scored a career-high 24 to lead the way and be named ASUN Player and Freshman of the Week.
Jones is second among ASUN freshmen in scoring at 12.4 points per game and her 6.8 rebounds per game is tops among freshmen in the conference.
Davis, however, leads the Wolves in scoring at 13.5 points per game but is averaging nearly 16 per game over the last five outings. Behind that duo in scoring is
K'Nari Holliday, but the junior leads UWG in rebounds at 6.9 per game which is top-10 in the ASUN.
West Georgia will undoubtedly rely on that trio in Wednesday's contest, and the Wolves will look to slow down Cordasia Harris and Solangelei Akridge who account for nearly 40 percent of ASU's offense. Harris is the top rebounder for Alabama State, and ranks fourth in the SWAC with 7.7 per game.
Alabama State is coming off of a tough three-game stretch, taking on Power Four opponents Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma. The Hornets were outscored 324-119 in that three-game stretch.
It's the first time the two teams have met officially, although the Wolves and Hornets met in an exhibition game to finish up preparation for the 2018-19 season.
Tip-time on Wednesday is set for 7 p.m. ET from the Dunn-Oliver Acadome in Montgomery, Alabama. The game will be broadcast on Hornet Sports Network.
