Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga. – After 40 competitive minutes of basketball, the University of West Georgia Women's Basketball team fell to the Valdosta State Blazers, 67-57, in The Complex.
West Georgia (12-9, 8-9 GSC) shot better from the field than #9 Valdosta State (19-2, 16-1 GSC) but lost the turnover battle by 11, leading to their 10-point loss.
After Valdosta State scored the first four points of the game, Aliyah and
Katelyn Dunning got West Georgia going by scoring seven straight points, giving the Wolves an early 7-4 lead. The Blazers quickly responded and countered
UWG's run with a 9-0 run, putting West Georgia in a 13-7 hole, heading into the media timeout. At this point in the quarter, VSU had all of the momentum but buckets from
K'Nari Holliday and
Sydne Tolbert kept the Wolves afloat as they went into the second quarter, trailing 21-13.
The Blazers got their lead up to as much as 10 in the second quarter before Holliday and
Zuriyah Davis halted Valdosta State's momentum. The duo of Holliday and Davis combined for 11 points in the quarter, leading to the Wolves winning the quarter, 19-15, to cut their deficit to four as we headed to halftime.
West Georgia shot 48% from the field, while holding Valdosta State to 40 percent shooting, but committed nine more turnovers than the Blazers which led to their 36-32 deficit.
The momentum that UWG secured at the end of the second didn't carry over to the third as VSU used a 9-1 run to take a 10-point lead, four minutes in. Holliday was a force down low in the quarter while Tolbert was aggressive, getting a number of paint touches but the Wolves till found themselves down 54-44 at the end of the third.
In the fourth quarter, West Georgia clamped down on the defensive end as they held Valdosta State to 22 percent from the field but the free throw disparity eliminated any chance of a UWG comeback. The Blazers went 9-10 in the final quarter while the Wolves only got to the line three times, propelling Valdosta State to a 67-57 win.
Holliday led the way for West Georgia with 19 points and eight rebounds on 9-13 shooting.
UWG will now get a week off before travelling to Montgomery, Alabama for a GSC rematch against the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks on Saturday.
