Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Baseball team dropped their midweek contest to the number one ranked Tampa Spartans, 10-2, on Tuesday night.
UWG (14-12, 7-5 GSC) played #1 Tampa (23-2, 5-1 SSC) well for majority of the game before an eight run sixth inning for the Spartans, virtually ended a chance at an upset for the Wolves.
Seth Dudley got the start for West Georgia and threw two shut out innings before head coach Jeff Smith called on Brendan Parks.
Dudley and Parks shut down an uber talented Tampa lineup through three innings before the Wolves struck first in the top of the fourth.
The inning began with a single from Jared Emory, bringing up Walt McConnell. McConnell belted an inside fastball to left field, clearing the wall for his fifth home run of the season to give UWG a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Parks continued to deal on the hill as he retired the Spartans with no issues, sending the game to the fifth with the Wolves still up two.
After four solid innings of work from Dudley and Parks, coach Smith brought in Jack Rasmussen out of the pen to pitch the fifth. Rasmussen ran into some trouble but was able to escape a potential big Tampa inning with just allowing one run to hold the lead at 2-1 for West Georgia.
The UWG offense was held scoreless for the second consecutive inning in their half of the sixth before the Spartans put together their best inning of offensive work in the bottom half of the sixth.
Lane Pearson got the call from the bullpen in the sixth and surrendered six runs, with five of them earned, giving Tampa a 7-2 lead. Smith called on Moody to get the Wolves out of a long inning before an error from Cade Hohl scored two more runs, extending the Spartans lead to 9-2.
Tampa added one more run to their lead in the eighth as they went on to win, 10-2.
Cooper Prince went 2-4 on the day while Dudley and Parks combined for four shutout innings and seven strikeouts.
West Georgia will be back in action on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. for a matchup with the seventh-ranked Saint Leo Lions.
