Baseball Splits Saturday Double Header in Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala- The University of West Georgia Baseball team split their Saturday double header against the Montevallo Falcons, dropping Game One 10-8, while winning Game Two, 11-4.

Errors were the story of the day as UWG (11-9, 7-4 GSC) accumulated four in their Game One loss while Montevallo (12-9, 4-4 GSC) recorded five, propelling the Wolves to their 11-4 win in Game Two.

GAME ONE: Montevallo, 10-8

The scoring first began in the bottom of the second for the Falcons as they were able to capitalize from a throwing error to take a 1-0 lead. Montevallo would add three more runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead before the Wolves got on the board.

Cade Hohl hit his first home run of the season in the top of the third to cut the Falcons' lead to three. 

The Wolves cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth as Jackson Webb brought home Jack Witmer with an RBI groundout. The Falcons would get that run right back in the bottom of the fourth with another Wolves error.

In the top of the fifth, the Wolves' bats heated up as they got three runs on three hits to tie the score at 5-5. Sam Ladner, Jared Emory, and Hohl each had an RBI single in the inning.

The Falcons would retake the lead in the bottom of sixth, scoring three runs on five hits. Luke Hatcher hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh to cut the Falcons lead to 8-6, but Montevallo would score two in the bottom of the seventh to once again stretch the lead the four.

In the top of the 8th, Jackson Webb and Walt McConnell hit back to back home runs to cut the Falcon lead to two, but it's all the Wolves would get, falling in the series opener.

GAME TWO: West Georgia, 11-4

Seth Dudley was the starting pitcher for Game two. He threw 4.2 innings, allowing three runs off five hits while collecting four strikeouts.

The Wolves were the first to score in Game Two. Walt McConnell hit an RBI-double in the top of the second, and later scored courtesy of an error by the Falcons bringing the score to 2-0. 

Luke Hatcher continued to tear the baseball up as he hit a solo homer in the top of the third. Jared Emory joined in on the home run party as he hit a solo homerun in the inning as the Wolves took a 4-0 lead as the game professed to the bottom of the third.

UWG gave up their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning with it being a homerun for the Falcons. Dudley got himself into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth giving up two more runs to finish his night.

In the top of the sixth, West Alabama had the bases loaded with two outs. Jack Witmer scored on a wild pitch, and then Hatcher continued his big day as he hit a two-run double to bring Hohl and McConnell. Hatcher was able to score off an error to extend the Wolves lead to 8-3 going to the bottom of the sixth.

 McConnell joined in on the homerun fun, as he launched a three run homerun to left field to increase the lead to 11-4 in the top of the seventh, clinching a seven-run win for UWG. 

Dudley picked up his second win of the season while McConnell recorded three hits and four RBIs. Ladner also picked up three hits and three RBIs.

The series finale will be at 1:00 EST tomorrow.
