Box Score OXFORD, Ala. – The 2024 season came to an end for the University of West Georgia Baseball team on Saturday after a 5-1 loss to the Montevallo Falcons.
The UWG (23-27, 14-16 GSC) offense produced eight hits on the night but left seven runners on base, resulting in their four-run loss to Montevallo (28-22, 17-13 GSC).
Second team All-GSC selection
Jonathan Hickman made his second start of the season in UWG's must-win game and struggled with command in the first inning, walking two batters before Montevallo's Connor Crowson ripped an RBI-double to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the first.
Hickman settled down in the second, but in the third, a throwing error from
Sam Ladner led to Montevallo scoring their second run of the ball game, putting West Georgia in a 2-0 deficit. Later in the inning, the Falcons' Jake O'Connell hit a three-run homer to extend Montevallo's lead to 5-0.
Cooper Prince broke up the Falcons' Adiel Melendez's no-hitter in the fourth inning with a double before a single from
Luke Hatcher and a walk drawn by
Jared Emory loaded up the bases with one out.
Jack Witmer came to the plate and delivered an RBI-single but that's all the Wolves would score in the inning as they left three runners stranded.
After four innings of work, Hickman's afternoon was done as head coach
Jeff Smith went to starter,
Will Dean, out of the bullpen. Dean got through the next three innings clean while Montevallo's Melendez continued to deal, keeping the score at 5-1 as the game progressed to the eighth.
Down to their last six outs, Prince and
Jackson Webb were able to record base hits but that's all the Wolves could muster up as they fell, 5-1 to the Falcons.
West Georgia finishes their 2024 season with a 23-27 overall record.
