Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – After two impressive wins on Day One, the University of West Georgia Volleyball team concluded the Gamecock Classic with a 3-1 loss to host, Jacksonville State, on Saturday.
West Georgia (2-1, 0-0 ASUN) struggled to contain a high powered Jacksonville State (3-0, 0-0 C-USA) offense led by Kayla Williams, Cary Havekost, and Sanai Rantanen who combined for 45 kills on a .308 hitting percentage.
JSU got off to a hot start offensively, led by Williams, who put down six kills on seven attempts, propelling the Gamecocks to a 16-8 lead to begin. Kills from Zoë LaBreche and
Sanai Young kept UWG in the set but the barrage from Williams was too much for the Wolves as Jacksonville State went on to win, 25-14.
Reeling from a clinical first set, Williams began the second with another kill before UWG cooled her and the Gamecock's offense down, using a 9-3 run to take a five-point lead. Back-to-back points from
Alex Strating and an ace from
Maggie Kachmarik kept the momentum on the side of the Wolves as West Georgia took their biggest lead of the set at 15-8. UWG continued to keep their distance from JSU, leading 23-16 late, until Jacksonville State went on a 6-0 run to make it a 23-22 game. With the set now in jeopardy for the Wolves, the Gamecocks committed two service errors to clinch the set, 25-23 for UWG.
Behind a kill from LaBreche and an ace from
Ashley Barnes, West Georgia led 2-0 to begin the third until Jacksonville State completely took over the game. A kill from Setter Ellie Garrett sparked a massive 13-1 JSU run, putting the Gamecocks up 13-3. The Wolves made a push to get back into the set but they wouldn't be able to overcome their early 10-point deficit, falling 25-15 in set three.
After a dominant third set, Jacksonville State carried their momentum into the fourth as they took a 10-4 lead to start. A kill from
Mary Morgan Formby swung the pendulum back towards UWG as West Georgia scored five of the next seven points to make it a 12-9 game. The Gamecocks scored the next three points before the Wolves continued the game of runs as LaBreche carried a 6-2 run to cut West Georgia's deficit to two. With the score sitting at 18-16, Williams got going again, putting down three more kills, including the final two of the match that clinched a 25-18 set win for Jacksonville State.
Offensively for UWG, LaBreche registered 12 kills while Formby put down 10. On the defensive side, Strating recorded a match-high five blocks.
West Georgia will be back in action next weekend for the UWG Invitational, beginning on Friday with matchups against UNC Asheville at 12:00 p.m. and Morgan State at 4:30 p.m.
