Road Redemption Awaits in Fort Myers

10/14/2025 2:56:00 PM

CARROLLTON, Ga.- The University of West Georgia continues ASUN Conference play on Thursday, October 16, as the Wolves travel to face Florida Gulf Coast University at Pickering Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. as the Wolves look to bounce back in their second meeting of the season against the Eagles.

Thursday's match marks the second matchup between West Georgia (3-11-1, 1-4-1 ASUN) and Florida Gulf Coast (8-4-2, 5-1-1 ASUN) this season, with the Wolves seeking redemption after a 4-0 loss in Carrollton on September 28. FGCU enters the match unbeaten in their last five matches and sits near the top of the ASUN standings, showcasing one of the most balanced attacks and defenses in the conference. The Eagles have outscored opponents 39-20 this season, averaging 2.4 goals per game while allowing just over one goal per contest.

West Georgia enters Thursday's road contest coming off a spirited 2-2 draw against Queens University of Charlotte on Recreation Day. Backed by the largest home crowd since the season opener, the Wolves showed determination, battling back from two deficits. Freshman midfielder Rachel Higgins and junior Noemi Casique each found the back of the net, while freshman goalkeeper Emily Sanabria continued her impressive season with six saves. Sanabria now ranks second in the ASUN and top five nationally with 88 saves, providing consistent leadership between the posts for UWG's defense.

A major story line for the Wolves this season has been the rise of their youth talent. Higgins has found her scoring touch with two goals this year, while fellow freshman Kaylen Brown leads the team with three goals on the season. Both have emerged as key contributors in the attack, offering a glimpse into the program's bright future. Sophomore Campbell Taylor and freshman Isa Ramirez have also provided valuable minutes on offense, while senior leaders like defender Aleyshka Orellano have anchored the midfield and back line with composure and experience.

Florida Gulf Coast has established themselves as one of the best teams in the ASUN. The Eagles are led by senior midfielder and ASUN Preseason Player of the Year Erika Zschuppe, who leads the nation with 17 goals and has scored in seven consecutive matches entering Thursday's contest. Zschuppe recently surpassed the 100 point mark for her career, becoming one of the most decorated players in FGCU history. Complementing her offensive firepower is freshman goalkeeper Madara Matrevica, who owns a .767 save percentage and continues to be a steady presence for the Eagles' defense. Matrevica recorded four saves in FGCU's recent 1-1 draw against Jacksonville.

Thursday's meeting will mark the third all time matchup between West Georgia and Florida Gulf Coast. FGCU holds a 2-0 advantage in the series, outscoring UWG 9-0 across those contests. The Wolves will look to flip the script in Fort Myers.
