CARROLLTON, Ga. - University of West Georgia head football coach Steve Englehart wasted no time in assembling his first staff at the University of West Georgia, formally announcing today the appointments of three important positions.
Englehart has announced Jayson Martin as the Wolves' Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator, Dan Owen as UWG's Defensive Coordinator, and George Schodowski as Director of Football Operations.
All three come to Carrollton from Presbyterian with Englehart's two coordinators having been by his side for multiple stops now.
Jayson Martin – Associate Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator
Martin and Englehart have worked together for well over a decade with UWG being their fourth stop together. At all three previous stops, Martin has coached a conference player of the year including a pair of those selections at Florida Tech.
"I'm blessed to be working at such a fast-growing university, not only academically but athletically as well. I'm honored that Coach Englehart has entrusted me to lead this offense, and I look forward to being a part of the Carrollton community," said Martin.
Martin was the OC at Presbyterian under Englehart and led the Blue Hose offense to finish ranked 27th in all of FCS football in total offense while they ranked 16th in the country in scoring offense (34.4/gm).
In between stints on Englehart's staff at PC and Florida Tech, Martin was the OC at Gannon University for one season in 2020. In his lone season at Gannon, he had a pair of All-PSAC First-Team all-conference honorees in running back Melvin Blanks and guard Montana Nietert.
At FIT, Martin was the Panthers' OC all seven seasons. In 2016, the Panthers offense led the Gulf South Conference and ranked 23rd in the country in scoring offense (37.4/gm).
Florida Tech reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs twice during his tenure with the Panthers. In 2020, Martin had a pair of former players, wide receiver Xavier Milton and tight end Kenny Johnston, earn selections on the Gulf South's All-Decade team.
In total over seven seasons, he coached 30 All-Gulf South selections and five all-Americans.
Martin was also alongside Englehart early in their careers at Rose-Hulman. While there, he engineered the offense that over three seasons finished no worse than top three in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 2009, the school led the league in scoring offense (36.5/gm), and total offense (428.2/gm) all while guiding Derek Eitel to the league's MVP honor. During that same season the offense broke Rose-Hulman program records for points scored (365), total offense (4,282), passing yards (2,849) and touchdowns (73).
As a player, he was a four-year member of Kentucky State's program as the quarterback from 1996-2000. He helped lead the Thorobreds to a Pioneer Bowl berth in 1997. Academically, he graduated from Kentucky State with a Bachelor's in Education in 2001.
Dan Owen – Defensive Coordinator
Owen comes to UWG after four seasons as Englehart's DC at Presbyterian, and is coming off a season in which the Blue Hose defense was one of the top units in the country. In 2025, PC ranked second in total defense (272.6/gm) and third in scoring defense (16.2/gm). Additionally, the Blue Hose defense led the country in first downs allowed.
"My family and I are honored to join the University of West Georgia community and continuing to work with Coach Englehart," said Owen. "This program has a strong foundation and a vision to compete at a championship level."
His defense has recorded two shutouts during his tenure: a dominant showing against Virginia-Lynchburg in 2024, allowing only 72 total yards and -4 rushing yards. His first conference shutout came in 2025 against Morehead State, a 41–0 rout where the defense forced five turnovers, allowed zero passing yards in the first quarter, and held the Eagles to just 277 total yards. Six of Morehead's nine first-half drives ended in either an interception, fumble, or turnover on downs.
Prior to his stint in Clinton, Owen spent time at Florida Atlantic and East Carolina that followed his time at Florida Tech under Englehart.
Owen spent five seasons on staff at Florida Tech and coached on both sides of the ball as well as serving as the Panthers' special teams coordinator. In 2015 & 2016 Manny Abad was selected First Team All-Gulf South Conference. Florida Tech reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs in just its fourth year of existence with an 8-3 record. During the 2016 season, the defense ranked 22nd in scoring defense with 20.0 points per game. In 2017, his special teams unit blocked five kicks and averaged 11.1 yards per return.
As a player, he spent time at Los Angeles Valley College and Florida Tech with Englehart as his head coach at the latter.
He received the Jason Leonard Coaches Award that is given to a player that exemplified what it meant to be an LA Valley Monarch by his commitment, leadership and attitude. He also received the AAA award for best demonstrating commitment to his academics, ability and attitude.
Owen and his wife, Katie, have one daughter, Andie.
George Schodowski – Director of Football Operations
Schodowski was on staff at Presbyterian helping coach the linebackers while serving as an assistant in football operations and video as well in 2025.
"I'm excited to be at UWG and be a part of the Wolves family! Coach Englehart will build something special here and I am grateful for the opportunity to raise the standard of this program," said Schodowski, "Victory is earned and enjoyed by all!"
A native of Irmo, South Carolina, Schodowski was a wide receiver on Englehart's PC team in 2023 and 2024 before hanging up the cleats to begin his coaching career as a student in 2025.
While at PC, Schodowski also spent a summer at Boston College as an intern in Player Personnel and Operations.
Schodowski just graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Presbyterian.
