CARROLLTON, Ga.-The University of West Georgia women's soccer team (0-10-2, 0-5 UAC) travels to Abilene, Texas, to face Abilene Christian (6-2-5, 3-0-2 UAC) on Friday afternoon at Elmer Gray Stadium.
The match, originally scheduled for Thursday evening, was rescheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. due to the weather forecast in Abilene. The contest marks a program first for West Georgia, as the Wolves prepare to face an opponent in the state of Texas for the first time.
Abilene Christian enters the matchup near the top of the United Athletic Conference standings, sitting atop the Red Division with a 3-0-2 conference record. The Wildcats are one of two undefeated teams remaining in conference play, alongside Eastern Kentucky, and have not lost since Sept. 3 against Tulsa. ACU has been particularly strong defensively, allowing just nine goals through 13 matches while goalkeeper Bella Medrano ranks fourth nationally in save percentage at .897. The Wildcats' team save percentage of .900 leads the UAC.
Offensively, Addison Briscoe has emerged as one of the conference's leading players. She ranks second in the UAC in shots and shots on goal, is tied for first in goals, and ranks third in points. Briscoe was recently named the UAC Player of the Week after scoring twice in two road victories, extending her scoring streak to five goals in the Wildcats' last six matches. ACU has scored 19 goals this season, averaging 1.46 per match, while recording 17.3 shots per game. The Wildcats have outscored their opponents 19-9 and hold an advantage in shots, 225-176.
West Georgia looks to build momentum against one of the conference's top teams after falling 3-1 to Central Arkansas on Sunday.
Noemi Casique converted a penalty kick in the 41st minute to bring the match level at 1-1, recording her third goal of the season. Despite the result, the Wolves showed their ability to create scoring opportunities, putting six shots toward goal and earning a goal against the Bears that entered the match with a 1-2-1 conference record.
Goalkeeper
Emily Sanabria has continued to anchor the Wolves' defense, ranking second in the UAC with 75 saves while leading the conference with 7.5 saves per match. West Georgia has recorded 88 shots this season, averaging 7.3 per game, and has scored six goals. The Wolves will look to limit the Wildcats' attacking opportunities and capitalize on their chances against an ACU defense that has conceded just nine goals all season.
Friday's matchup provides West Georgia with an opportunity to challenge one of the UAC's top teams on the road. The Wolves will aim to disrupt the Wildcats' unbeaten conference run and earn their first victory of the season as they continue conference play in Texas.
