CARROLLTON, Ga.- Coming off their first road win in over a month and riding a two-game winning streak, the University of West Georgia men's basketball team continues a pivotal four-game road stretch on Saturday with a trip to Conway, Arkansas to face one of the hottest teams in the ASUN. The Wolves (12-13, 6-7 ASUN) square off with Central Arkansas (16-10, 11-2 ASUN) at 2 p.m., with the Bears entering the matchup on a nine-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the conference. Central Arkansas leads the all-time series 3-0, but UWG looks to snap the Bears' winning streak as the ASUN Tournament approaches. The Wolves ended their road skid with a statement victory over North Alabama and now aim to secure consecutive wins away from Carrollton for the first time this season.
West Georgia's latest win over North Alabama showcased the Wolves' offensive depth, featuring four players in double figures. Josh Smith delivered a career performance off the bench, erupting for a career-high 28 points while drilling a career-best five triples. Smith shot a blistering 69 percent from the field and 71 percent from deep, adding four rebounds to round out a career performance. The guard from Chicago now ranks sixth in the ASUN at 16.0 points per game and has established himself as one of the conference's most dangerous scoring threats off the bench.
Shelton Williams-Dryden continues to anchor the Wolves on both ends of the floor. The senior recorded his 12th double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds while shooting perfectly from beyond the arc. Williams-Dryden ranks second in the ASUN in scoring at 20.6 points per game and leads the conference in rebounding at 9.6 per contest. Nationally, he sits tied for 14th in double-doubles, tied for 21st in rebounding, and tied for 24th in scoring. He has scored at least 20 points in seven of his last ten games, fueling UWG's late season push.
Senior guard Malcolm Noel added 16 points, three rebounds, and six assists in the win, facilitating the UWG offense. Noel leads the Wolves and ranks 12th in the ASUN in assists at 3.1 per game, while continuing to stretch defenses after knocking down three triples. JaVar Daniel rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points and two blocks in just 17 minutes. Daniel leads the conference in blocks at two per game and ranks 26th nationally, recording at least one block in eight of his last ten contests.
In Central Arkansas most recent win over Bellarmine, the Bears had five players in double figures. Camren Hunter led the way with 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Hunter ranks fourth in the ASUN in scoring at 19.2 points per game and shoots 50 percent from the field, sixth in the conference. Ty Robinson added 15 points and is third in the ASUN with 1.7 steals per game.Â
Luke More added 14 points behind four three-pointers and ranks seventh in the ASUN in assists at 3.6 per game while sitting eighth in steals at 1.5 per contest. Javion Guy-King and Cole McCormick contributed 12 and 10 points respectively, underscoring the Bears' balanced offensive attack.
From a team standpoint, the Bears average 80.1 points per game, fourth in the league, while shooting 45 percent from the field and 34 percent from beyond the arc. Central Arkansas ranks second in the ASUN in assists with 16.6 per game and second in steals with 8.8 per contest.Â
