Road Test Awaits West Georgia Softball Against UAB

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Wednesday will take the UWG softball team to Birmingham, Alabama for their first midweek contest of the season against the UAB Blazers at 5 p.m. EST.

West Georgia (3-7) looks to get back in the win column after dropping the final three games of the Wings Etc. Classic in Spartanburg, South Carolina last weekend. UAB (5-5) went 3-2 last weekend at the Mardi Gras Classic in Mobile, Alabama.

The Wolves' offense has been producing at a solid level, averaging nearly 6.0 runs per game and slugging 11 home runs in 10 games. Seven of those 11 home runs have come off the bats of Jenna Samuel and Ella Oswalt. Samuel, UWG's leader in average and RBIs is hitting .467 and ranks third in the ASUN in RBIs with 14. Oswalt, a freshman from Newnan, leads UWG in home runs with four. Only three freshmen in the country have more than Oswalt: Allison Oneacre (Penn State), Bri Alejandre (UCLA), and McKenzie Leitgen (Iowa).

A staple in UWG's lineup since she debuted in the spring of 2024 has been Megan Waites, and the junior is one hit away from reaching her 100th career hit. Waites will be making her 112th career start on Wednesday and is a career .300 hitter and enters the week hitting .324. The Loganville native is also one double away from 20, and 12 away from cracking the top-10 in career doubles.

Through 10 games, UWG has trotted out five different starting pitchers with Calli Hardison earning four starts. The lone pitcher who has yet to start a game is freshman Cacie Cutright who is UWG's leader in ERA at 5.16. Despite not starting a game, she is tied with Hardison with a team-high 19.0 innings of work, and leads in strikeouts with 12.

UAB has the advantage on paper, hitting .304 as a team to UWG's .272 team average. Abbi Perkins and Charlee Bennett each lead UAB with a .385 average. The Blazers score 4.7 runs per game and do it differently than UWG as the Blazers haven't hit a home run this season.

The Blazers are led in the circle by Olivia Cummings who is 4-0 with a 3.03 ERA in 30.0 innings thus far through the 2026 campaign. Cummings appeared against UWG in 2025 and the Wolves tagged her for five runs on four hits in 1.1 innings.

West Georgia and UAB met twice in Carrollton in 2025 with the Blazers sweeping the doubleheader by scores of 7-5 and 17-3.

Wednesday's game is set to begin at 5 p.m. EST from UAB's campus in Birmingham.
