History Made as UWG Men's Golf Wins First Team Title in Division I Era

2/22/2026 3:16:00 PM

SAVANNAH, Ga. - A historic day unfolded on Sunday in Savannah as the UWG men's golf team won their first team title in the Division I era, completing a comeback that started seven shots back with a final round 299 to win the Savannah Intercollegiate by two strokes.

West Georgia also had an individual medalist for the first time as a Division I program as sophomore Milton Wallin shot a final round 73 to tie for first place.

On a day where strong, gusty winds had scores up by five strokes on average, the Wolves shot the low round of the day, an 11-over 299, to erase a seven-stroke deficit and climb from seventh to the top of the leaderboard. UWG edged out Iona by two strokes and Creighton, the highest ranked team in the field, by four shots.

"A truly unbelievable day. I can't say enough about the guts the guys showed this week," said head coach Shannon Lipham, "I have never been on a golf course in wind like what we saw today. Milton Wallin played amazing. To see the work he has put in to get back to a championship level pay off for him was a great exclamation point on an already historic day. I'm so happy for him."

Wallin made two birdies and an eagle in his final round, finishing the tournament with nine birdies and the first individual win by a UWG men's golfer since Austin Fulton in 2022.

Max Winnersjo had the best round of the day for the Wolves, shooting a one-under 71 with four birdies to notch a seventh-place finish. Thomas Romani carded a Sunday 76 to climb up the leaderboard to finish tied for 42nd alongside teammate Tyler Nesci who shot a 79 on Sunday.

The Wolves got a 63rd place finish from Luke Sienkiewicz who finished his tournament with an 83 on Sunday.

UWG's win was the first outright team win since they won their home tournament in the fall of 2019 and the first outright win away from their home course since March of 2019. UWG last finished atop the leaderboard in the fall of 2021, but fell to Newberry in a playoff.

"For us to get the first D1 win for the University of West Georgia means so much," said Lipham, who is in his second season as UWG's head coach. "It's a great day for our golf program! The future is so bright!"

West Georgia will look to carry the momentum to their next event, The Surf Club Invitational, on March 8-9 in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
