UWG Baseball Takes the Fight to No. 7 Auburn

2/24/2026 2:02:00 PM

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Following a three-game road series at Little Rock, West Georgia baseball prepares to take on No. 7 Auburn University at Plainsman Park this Wednesday at 7 p.m. The SECN+ streaming link is tagged on the UWG baseball schedule.

Marking the first of three power conference opponents that the Wolves (1-7) will face this season, UWG will be put to the test when they take on an Auburn team (6-1) that is coming off a tournament sweep over Kansas State, Florida State and Louisville.

Wednesday's matchup marks the first time UWG and Auburn have clashed on the diamond.

West Georgia will start sophomore righty Maverick Torres on the mound, marking his first start of the season. In five frames across three games, Torres has struck out three batters and allowed one run this year.

Starting for AU is sophomore righty Andreas Alvarez, who is the brother of West Georgia's Aiden Alvarez. In four frames of his lone appearance, Alvarez struck out eight Cincinnati Bearcats and allowed one earned run.

Like with most midweeks, expect to see a heavy rotation on the mound from both teams.

After averaging about ten hits per game (9.25) in the opening series, UWG was limited to seven per game in the latest series.

Following game three at ULR, head coach Jeff Smith stated, "We need to do better swinging the bats. We had too many zeros up there this weekend."

Leading the charge at the plate for UWG so far this season is second baseman Gabe Wuerth, who posts a team-best .375 batting average. Totaling nine hits, Wuerth has recorded a UWG-high five runs, driven in three RBIs, hit one homer and a double. Leading the Wolves' starters in slugging percentage (.542) and on base percentage (.444) has resulted in Wuerth posting a UWG-best .986 OPS. With Wuerth transferring in from Georgia College & State University, Wednesday's matchup will mark the first time the second baseman faced a Power Four opponent. This can be said for roughly three other UWG starters (number depends on which lineup the Wolves go with).

Looking at Auburn, the Tigers' lineup boasts five starters recording a .400 or better batting average. In 18 at-bats, second baseman Brandon McCraine tallied eight hits, resulting in an Auburn-best .556 average. Not only does he lead the Tigers and rank tenth nationally in batting average, his .652 on base percentage is a team-best and ranks him 22nd nationally, while he also leads the AU with a .722 slugging percentage.

Through seven games, Auburn has outscored its opponents 44-24 despite an 8-0 loss to Cincinnati. On the other hand, UWG has been outscored 67-37 through its eight games.

Coach Smith described Wednesday's matchup as a great chance to get better against top competition, stating, "Our guys are up for the challenge. We approach each game as an opportunity for us to go out there and learn some things about our club, and get better."

First pitch from Plainsman Park is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Streaming and live stat links are tagged at the top of the page and on the UWG baseball schedule.
