West Georgia Sits Third After Day One at ASUN Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The University of West Georgia men's track and field team opened competition at the ASUN Indoor Track & Field Championships inside the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center, turning in two record breaking performances and multiple personal bests. After day one, the Wolves sit in third place with 27 points, positioning themselves to compete for a top-three team finish.

Heptathlon (Multi Events)
Day one began with the heptathlon, featuring the 60m, long jump, shot put, and high jump. Rhett Howard set the tone early, winning his heat in the 60m with a personal best time of 7.22, placing fourth overall. Matthew Brunner followed with a personal best of 7.40.

In the long jump, Brunner led UWG with a mark of 6.32m, while Conner Changizi recorded a personal best leap of 5.93m. Changizi continued his strong showing in the shot put, leading the  Wolves with a mark of 10.82m, good for fifth place overall.

The day concluded with the high jump, where Brunner soared to 1.84m to claim first place in the event. The heptathlon will resume Friday with the 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1000m.

Field Events
Nicholas Lane solely represented UWG in the weight throw, finishing with a mark of 13.25m. In the long jump, Marcus Thompson Jr. delivered a personal best leap of 7.03m, earning fifth place. He was closely followed by Godsfavor Adenuga at 6.99m, while Ricky Griffin added a personal best of 6.06m.

The pole vault proved to be a highlight of the day. Kareem Nazim recorded another personal best and broke his own UWG school record once again, clearing 4.72m to finish second and earn the Wolves' only podium finish of the day. Grayson Greene posted a personal best of 4.37m, Shea Thiewes matched that mark with a season-best 4.37m, and Sam Hall rounded out the group with a season-best 4.07m.

Running Events
On the track, Solomon Johnson clocked a personal best time of 4:20.71 in the mile. In the 60m hurdles, Landon Chovanic and Ishmeal Neblett both led UWG with matching times of 8.59, followed by a personal best 8.74 from Kellen Andrews.

Matt Strickland advanced to the 400m finals with a third place time of 48.37, while Chovanic added a personal best 50.37. In the 800m, Abenezer Woellore posted a season best 1:56.20.

The 60m dash saw another record breaking performance from Gavin Barlow, who captured first place in 6.72, setting a new personal record and breaking his own UWG school record. Vaughn Dickenson Jr. also qualified for the finals, finishing sixth with a personal best time of 6.87. 

Kyron Belton advanced to the 200m finals with a season-best 22.00, while Trey Campbell recorded a season-best 22.12 and Dickenson Jr. added a season-best 22.37. The day closed with the distance medley relay team of Solomon Johnson, Jackson Connors, Hyrum Smartt, and Noah Anderson crossing the line in 10:26.11.

With 27 points through the opening day, West Georgia remains firmly in contention as the ASUN Indoor Championships continue Saturday. The Wolves will look to build on their momentum and secure a top-three finish by the meet's conclusion.
