CARROLLTON, Ga. - On the heels of their first series victory of the season, West Georgia baseball stays at Cole Field to take on Georgia State this Tuesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. THIS IS AN UPDATE FROM THE ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED SCHEDULE.
Securing four wins in the last seven games, UWG (5-15, 2-1 ASUN) is carrying considerable momentum heading into the midweek matchup against the Panthers (10-11, 0-3 SBC), a team that is currently riding a five-game losing streak.
Currently, UWG leads the all-time series 12-5-1 over GSU. In last year's games, both teams took wins at their home fields, with UWG winning 12-11 at Cole Field and the Panthers winning 4-0 at the GSU Baseball Complex.
Looking at both offenses, the Wolves average 4.9 runs per game on a .240 batting average this season, while GSU has scored 6.1 runs per game with a slightly higher .253 batting average.Â
One Wolf who put together a solid showing at the plate against Jacksonville was designated hitter Andon Lewis. In game one against the Dolphins, Lewis led the team and tied his career-high of three hits to drive in a personal-best five RBIs. In the series finale, the senior recorded his fifth multi-hit performance of the year with a pair of singles. Currently, he posts a .288 batting average with a .854 OPS. Notably, Lewis served as the Panthers' primary designated hitter last year.
For GSU, sophomore center fielder John Beverley leads the Panthers with a .373 batting average and .859 OPS. Going over his game logs, Beverley opened the season on fire, recording four multi-hit performances in the first eight games before falling into a week-long cold spell. Since entering the month of March, Beverley has started to warm back up. One of his strongest performances as of late was a two-hit, two-RBI night in the Panthers' midweek matchup vs Mercer (March 10).
In the field and on the mound, UWG posts a combined 9.00 ERA and has averaged 1.35 errors per game. On the other hand, GSU posts a team ERA of 5.93 while committing an average of 1.1 errors per game.
Despite neither team having announced its starting pitchers yet, fans can expect a heavy rotation on the mound. Those starting decisions will be tagged on the game notes if they are made available.
