Wolves Head Northwest to Face Wichita State

3/4/2026 2:54:00 PM

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball is set to take its furthest road trip of the season this weekend, traveling nearly 1000 miles northwest for a four-game series against the Wichita State Shockers. First pitch on Friday is set for 4:05 p.m., and the game is streaming on ESPN+

With UWG (1-11) riding an 11-game losing streak, the Wolves will have their hands full when they take on a WSU team (9-3) that has won its four-game home series over Northern Colorado and Omaha, and split an away series at Hawaii.

One thing that the Shockers have done very well this season is limit their opponents' scoring. If you take away a 15-8 loss in their latest matchup, Wichita State has limited its opponents to an average of just 2.5 runs per game.

Every good defense starts with solid pitching, and the Shockers have had that so far.

While the WSU starting rotation is currently not set, the Wolves will most likely face junior righty Matthew Cuccias at some point. Totaling 13 innings through his three appearances, Cuccias posts a team-best 0.69 ERA with 15 strikeouts. The only run he has given up this year came against Omaha in the Shockers' latest game.

Another pitcher the Pack will probably face is junior righty Johnny Nuanez. Making a start in all of their weekend series, Nuanez has totaled 10 strikeouts and posted a 1.88 ERA through 14.1 frames.

Junior left-handed pitcher Reese Kortum has also made starts in all three WSU series this season. Totaling 12 innings on the mound, Kortum has recorded a 3.00 ERA with 14 strikeouts.

The fourth Shocker the Wolves will most likely face on the mound is junior righty Brady Hamilton. Accumulating a team-high 16.1 innings through his three starts, Hamilton posts a 3.86 ERA with a WSU-best 18 strikeouts.

For the Wolves, sophomore righty Maverick Torres is set to pitch in game one. In 9.2 innings across five appearances, Torres has struck out six batters and conceded just two earned runs, resulting in a stellar 1.86 ERA.

Game two will see senior right-handed pitcher Lex Kenny make his third start of the season. Pitching in a team-high 17 frames, Kenny has posted a 3.71 ERA and recorded six strikeouts.

Redshirt senior right Luke Ridley is set to pitch in game three for UWG. In his two starts, Ridley has struck out seven batters and posted a 9.45 ERA. Securing the Wolves' lone win of the season, Ridley also recorded a single-game team-high seven strikeouts vs Central Michigan.

Game four's starter for UWG is currently undecided.

At the plate, UWG has had a handful of highlight moments in the batter's box this season. In the Wolves' latest series at South Alabama, left fielder Anthony Cole crushed the Pack's first grand slam of the year. What makes this even more impressive is that in his previous at-bat, Cole hit a home run at No. 7 Auburn. His four home runs on the season lead the Wolves and tie him for seventh in the conference.

Another Wolf who has been on a tear in the batter's box is senior center fielder Blake Bradford. Playing in ten games, Bradford leads the team and ranks second in the ASUN with a .474 batting average. Fueled by a tenth-best in-ASUN .632 slugging percentage, Bradford's 1.108 OPS also ranks tenth in the league. In his first start of the season, Bradford led the Wolves with three base hits against No. 7 Auburn, tying his career-high that he set at Stetson last season.

With WSU averaging eight runs a game, the Wolves will need both of these batters and the rest of the Pack to have a big week at the plate if they want to keep pace with the Shockers. Currently, UWG averages 4.25 runs per game.

For WSU, the Shockers have been led in the batter's box by designated hitter Owen Washburn. In his 39 at-bats, Washburn has recorded a team-high 17 hits with 15 RBIs and 13 runs, resulting in a Shockers-best .436 batting average. Also adding four doubles and two home runs, Washburn posts a superb .692 slugging percentage.

First pitch on Friday is set for 4:05 p.m. at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field at Gene Stephenson Park. Streaming and live stat links for all four games are available on the UWG baseball schedule.
