Softball Travels to Athens to Square off with Nationally-Ranked UGA

CARROLLTON, Ga. – For the first time since reclassifying to Division I athletics, the UWG softball team is set to square off with an SEC foe on Tuesday as the Wolves make the trip to Athens for a midweek contest against the 12th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs.  

West Georgia (8-17, 0-0 ASUN) will play their fifth consecutive game against a team nicknamed the Bulldogs after playing three against Gardner-Webb and one against Samford. Georgia (17-9, 1-2 SEC) opened SEC play last weekend at Arkansas, and enters Tuesday with a 13-4 record at Turner Softball Stadium. 

Last weekend for the Wolves was a 1-2 showing in which UWG moved to 3-4 in games decided by one run with a 5-4 victory over Gardner-Webb in the series opener before being swept in a Saturday doubleheader. 

Jenna Samuel continues to lead the Wolves in average, hitting .500 in four games last week and entering play with a .451 average. The junior is up to 23 RBIs which ranks eighth in the ASUN. 

Freshman Ella Oswalt is batting .301 while leading the team with six home runs and ranking second with 17 RBIs. 

In the circle, senior Calli Hardison spun her 20th career complete game last Friday, earning a victory over Gardner-Webb. Hardison enters this week with a 4.40 ERA, although she has not made a midweek appearance thus far in 2026. 

LAst week's midweek action at Samford saw head coach Kristy Burton go with sophomore Delaney Hoyle to start before freshman Cacie Cutright pitched the final five innings, allowing just two earned runs. Cutright is second on the team with a 5.59 ERA and leads the staff in innings pitched with 51.1. 

For UGA, they are led offensively by Sarah Gordon who is batting .507 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs. Right behind her is Tyler Ellison with a .455 average, seven home runs and a team-high 27 RBIs. Kierstin Roose has 10 home runs for the Bulldogs, ranking 11th in the country. 

Addisen Fisher leads the Bulldogs in the circle with a 1.81 ERA, but Randi Roelling has thrown the majority of innings at 58.2 while striking out 65 and carrying an ERA of 3.46. 

The Wolves and Bulldogs square off at 6 p.m. from Turner Softball Stadium in Athens. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
