Decatur, Alabama – West Georgia (20-18, 4-6 GSC) swept the West at the GSC Crossover at Wilson-Morgan Park. The Wolves defeated Arkansas Tech (28-15, 11-5 GSC) 1-0 in game one, and then Christian Brothers 4-3 in the second game.
UWG had payback on the menu for the Golden Suns, as last year at the Crossover, ATU complete a “perfect game” at the Wolves expense.
West Georgia did not need a bundle of runs to defeat Arkansas Tech, but used sound fielding and pitching to top one of the top teams in the Gulf South.
With one out, senior right fielder #
Erica Colee# singled up the middle and advanced to second after Casey Hammons went to first for the second out of the inning on a come backer from #
Paige Hanson#. Colee moved over to third after a throw from catcher Michelle Paul bounced off of Colee and got away from the ATU middle infield. #
Candice Brown# was 2-for-3 in the game and her double to left field proved to be the game winner.
#
Kacie Crider# collected her 11th victory of the year, and scattered nine Golden Sun hits through the complete game shutout.
The Wolves only had those three hits, but made solid connection off of one of the top pitchers in the GSC in Casey Hammons (12-6).
West Georgia went from defeating the top team in the GSC West to a thriller against a Christian Brothers (10-13, 2-9 GSC) team that has shared several of the same struggles that the Wolves' have incurred.
The Lady Buccaneers used three perfectly placed hits to manufacture a three run third, and it appeared that one inning of production would be enough for the victory.
UWG got one run back in the fourth off a #
Kaley Sullivan# single to left when #
Heather Crews# came around from second to cut the CBU lead to 3-1.
Sullivan scored on a sacrifice fly to right centerfield off of Hanson's bat to make the score 3-2, but now the Wolves were down to their final out. With Colee on first, Brown laced a hit over a leaping Jessica Ambers glove at second, and Colee beat centerfielder's Kallie McFatter's throw to third, allowing Brown to move up to second on the throw.
With a base open and two out, #
Kim Weaver# stepped to the plate. The senior shortstop was 0-for-her last-8 attempts at the plate, and was not going to see anything close to the plate from pitcher Nikki Dunn.
Weaver sent Dunn's first pitch slicing toward the right field line and the ball landed right on the line for a game winning double. Her hit capped off the three run, four hit inning for West Georgia and completing a day one sweep at the 2009 GSC Crossover.
#
Haley Dunn# (6-2) threw one inning but collected the win.
West Georgia plays the two late games on Saturday, beginning with Henderson State at 5:00 pm and followed by Arkansas-Monticello at 7:00 pm.
