UWG (13-36, 5-13 ASUN) opens the series with UNF (33-17, 8-10 ASUN) in fifth place in the Graphite Division, while the Ospreys sit in fourth. With only the top four teams from each division earning a berth in the conference tournament, this matchup is pivotal for the Wolves to keep their postseason hopes alive with UNF holding a three-game lead over UWG.This marks the first meeting of the season between the Wolves and the Ospreys on the diamond.
West Georgia is coming off a tough 14-6 loss in its midweek matchup against the Samford Bulldogs. Despite the outcome, the Wolves had several players drive in runs, with
Madison Humber,
Bekah Johnson, and
Delaney Hoyle each contributing RBIs to account for the team's six runs.
Looking ahead,
Jenna Samuel will need to be a key piece for the Wolves if they want to find success in this series against UNF, as the junior ranks among the top hitters in the ASUN. The Louisiana native is fifth in the conference with a .406 batting average and also ranks fifth in on-base percentage at .493.
North Florida enters this matchup following a 4-1 loss to No. 22 UCF. The Ospreys held the lead for much of the game but fell short late, surrendering two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
UNF has been powered by its dominant pitching duo of Cameron Ponich and Kate Peters. Ponich leads the league with a 1.73 ERA and a 13-4 record, while Peters is close behind in second with a 2.12 ERA and a 7-3 mark.
For the Wolves to remain in postseason contention, they will need to sweep the Ospreys this weekend, which would move them into a tie for fourth place with UNF.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. at the UNF Softball Complex in Jacksonville.
