CARROLLTON, Ga. - The UWG softball team has four home games remaining and tomorrow marks the final midweek game of the 2026 season as the Wolves host Samford on April 21 at 5 p.m.
West Georgia (13-35, 5-13 ASUN) has lost five straight games and have only won one of their midweek matchups this season while Samford (22-26, 11-4 SOCON) has won five straight which includes a 3-2 win over second-ranked Alabama.
Last week, UWG fell to Alabama State in midweek action and was then swept at Stetson. Game one in Deland was a walkoff win for Stetson on a grand slam, while series finale in was the Wolves' 11th one-run game. UWG is 6-5 in those games now as they enter a crucial stretch over the final seven games of the season.
Jenna Samuel leads UWG in batting average, hitting .394 although the junior missed the Stetson series, and the Wolves hope to get her bat back in the lineup as she also leads in home runs with nine and RBIs with 36.
A pair of freshmen are two and three in average as Cacie Cutright now has the minimum number of at-bats to qualify for team leads and she is second on the team with a .313 average and seven home runs. Ella Oswalt is third in average, batting .283 with seven long balls of her own while driving in the second most RBIs with 24.
Cutright is also UWG's leader in the circle as she now has tossed 20 more innings than anyone on the team and boasts a 5.02 ERA. The Newnan native pitched in all three games at Stetson this weekend, putting up a 3.65 ERA over 7.2 innings.
Samford's offense is led by Olivia Shaw with a .370 average with eight home runs while Katie Campbell's .336 average and 15 home runs also catches your attention. It was Campbell's fifth-inning double last week against Alabama that gave Samford the lead in which they ultimately held on to upset the Crimson Tide.
In the circle, Makinley Turner is Samford's ace as she has a 2.93 ERA over 76.1 innings pitched while Brandy Phillips has thrown 67.2 innings and has a 4.14 ERA.
UWG traveled to Samford back on March 4 and fell 8-1. It was Olivia Treece who spun the complete game victory for Samford while Cacie Cutright pitched 5.0 innings of relief and allowed just two earned runs after inheriting a 3-1 deficit.
First pitch is set for 5 p.m. from University Softball Field on April 21.
