Baseball Week 2 Preview

Carrollton, GA - After a strong start to the season Sunday against Talladega, head coach Skip Fite and his West Georgia baseball team get one of the biggest tests of the 2011 season in just the second weekend, as the Wolves are set to play four games against fourth-ranked Georgia College & State.

Fite picked up a solid outing from a pair of freshman against Talladega, as #Brandon Crumbley# and #Jammie Sexton# each picked up their first victories at West Georgia in the opening day doubleheader.

The Wolves, behind Crumbley's two-hit performance in six innings of work, took the opener 7-0. In the nightcap, Sexton worked a near perfect 4 1/3 innings to lead the Wolves to an 11-3 victory.

As a team, West Georgia hit .347 in the doubleheader, led by five different players who had multiple hits on the day.

Junior #Stuart Drew# introduced himself to the UWG lineup well, going 3-for-6 with four RBI on the afternoon. Another transfer, #Andy Marinelli# also had four RBI in a 3-for-8 effort. Marinelli belted the first home run of the season in the first inning of game two, a three-run shot that gave West Georgia the lead for good.

Defensively, the Wolves had but two errors on the day, one from Drew and one from Marinelli.

On the day, West Georgia pounded out 17 total hits, and with the new “deadened” bats in play, the Wolves had four extra-base hits, including two doubles, a triple and a home run.

West Georgia faces a formidable opponent this weekend in GCSU, as the Bobcats are coming off of a solid two-win effort in a three-game series last weekend against fifth-ranked Tampa.

The Bobcats lost the opener on Friday 13-4, then took both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday by an 8-5, 8-4 count.

Preseason All-America performer Richard Pirkle did not disappoint in the first weekend, going 6-for-13 with two home runs and five runs scored.

The Wolves and Bobcats will play a doubleheader in Carrollton on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the teams will play another doubleheader, but change the venue to Milledgeville at 1 p.m.
