Milledgeville, GA - After a one-sided victory for each team on Friday, the West Georgia Wolves and Georgia College Bobcats locked horns Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader that was exactly the opposite. This one was a nail-biter throughout, with GCSU pulling out a narrow 2-1 victory in game one and a 6-5 win in the second game at John Kurtz Field.
The hallmark of the early part of the season for West Georgia has been strong pitching, and head coach
Skip Fite received another great outing on Sunday in game one, this time from senior #Jared Slaven#, who was knocked around on opening day against Talladega.
After giving up two runs in the bottom of the first, Slaven settled down and began mowing down the GCSU hitters. In the bottom of the second, Slaven gave up a triple to second baseman Luke McKay.
That was the final hitter to reach base for the Bobcats with Slaven on the mound, as he retired the next 17 batters in order. In that span, he walked none and struck out seven. Slaven's line for the day was seven innings pitched, two runs allowed on three hits with nine strikeouts and a walk.
In the eighth, freshman hurler #
Blake McLemore# kept Slaven's momentum going, striking out two of the Bobcats' three hitters in the inning to keep the game close.
In the ninth, the Wolves threatened with two outs, as #
Keith Borger# reached on an error by the shortstop, then moved to second on the throw. #
Michael Hollis# followed that by reaching on an error by the first baseman, which moved pinch-runner #Danny Bodziak# to third. UWG third baseman #
Garrett May# then walked to load the bases.
Senior #
Nick Sperounis# walked, bringing home the first Wolves' run of the day and bringing West Georgia's top hitter so far this season, #
Stuart Drew# to the plate with the bases loaded. But GCSU brought in closer #Tanner Moore#, who induced a ground ball to second from Drew, closing out the game with a 2-1 win for the Bobcats.
In the nightcap, West Georgia drew first blood in the top of the third. Drew led off with a double, followed by a bunt single from #
Brett Wright#, giving the Wolves runners at the corners. During #
Andy Marinelli#'s at-bat, GSCU starter Ryan Parson threw a wild pitch. Drew broke for home, but was caught by catcher Richard Pirkle, keeping the Wolves off the scoreboard.
Marinelli made up for it, as he singled with Wright on second, bringing home the first run of the contest.
Georgia College responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and another run in the bottom of the fourth, taking a solid 3-1 lead.
But in the fifth, the UWG bats went to work. Drew led off with a single and promptly stole second base. Wright walked and Marinelli attempted a sacrifice bunt. The throw went a little wild and Drew came around to score. Next up was #
Daniel Henley#, who blasted a three-run home run to left-center, giving the Wolves a 5-3 lead.
The Bobcats clawed their way back into it and scored two runs off of reliever #
Garrett May# in the bottom of the seventh to take the victory.
The Wolves return home this Wednesday to take on another Peach Belt Conference opponent in Montevallo. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
