West Georgia blasts Montevallo in midweek action

Carrollton, GA - The bats and arms were on display Wednesday afternoon at Cole Field, as the West Georgia Wolves pounded out an 11-1 victory over the Montevallo Falcons in midweek baseball action.

The Wolves blasted the Montevallo pitching staff, knocking around four different UM pitchers for 11 runs on 13 hits in the game. On the opposite side, the UWG pitching staff was stellar, as head coach Skip Fite used six pitchers to combine for a four-hitter.

Senior starter #Jacob Fox# allowed the only run of the game for Montevallo in the top of the first, giving up a one-out double followed by a two-out single to put the Wolves behind 1-0.

In the bottom of the second, the first two batters of the inning took care of that lead, as left fielder #Michael Hollis# singled through the left side to lead off the frame. Freshman right fielder #Keith Borger# put West Georgia ahead for good just two pitches later, belting a two-run home run over the center field wall.

#Stuart Drew# and #Brett Wright# added RBI singles in the bottom of the second to give the Wolves a commanding 4-1 lead.

In the top of the third, Fite handed the ball to junior college transfer #Jarrod Parker#, who retired the next nine Montevallo batters, essentially taking the Falcons out of the game and taking pressure off of the UWG lineup. The junior worked three hitless innings, striking out three.

The next big blast came in the bottom of the seventh. Catcher #Andy Marinelli# led off the inning with a double, then scored on a single from senior #Daniel Henley#. After the Wolves loaded the bases, junior #Garrett May# delivered the decisive blow, a grand slam home run to left-center.

Four different Wolves had multiple hits in the game, led by Hollis' 3-for-5 effort with two runs scored. Borger was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBI and Drew went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. May added a 1-for-2 effort with four RBI.

Fox took the victory, allowing just one run in two innings of work. Sophomore #Randall Wright#, freshman #Blake McLemore# and senior #Keith Manley# worked a perfect eighth and ninth inning to close out the win.

West Georgia heads east this weekend, taking on Augusta State in Augusta in a three-game set with the Jaguars. It will make eight straight games against Peach Belt Conference opponents.
