Carrollton, GA - Facing the Peach Belt has been a chore this season so far for the West Georgia Wolves, as head coach
Skip Fite's squad has faced a PBC opponent eight times in 10 games thus far, and after this weekend's sweep at the hands of Augusta State, the Wolves are 2-6 in those games.
The Wolves struggled at the plate through the three-game set, hitting just .163 against a solid pitching staff from the Jaguars. In game one, the Wolves fell 7-6 in 11 innings, followed by a 4-3 and 4-0 loss in Sunday's doubleheader.
Of the players who started all three games on the weekend, only two were above the dreaded .200 "Mendoza line." Junior #
Stuart Drew# was 4-for-11 with three runs scored and freshman #
Keith Borger# was 3-for-12 with a run scored and two RBI. Freshman #
Justin Croft# was 3-for-7 in two games this weekend.
West Georgia's gloves were working just fine through the three-game series, as the Wolves committed just three errors in 73 putouts over the course of the two-day run.
On the mound, the Wolves had a collective 4.44 ERA with #Jammie Sexton#, #Jared Slaven# and #
Randall Wright# each taking a loss in the series. The UWG hurlers struck out 16 batters to ASU's 11, but the Jaguars won the battle of the walks, issuing just seven free passes to the Wolves' 16.
The Wolves started and ended the series in two very different fashions, as West Georgia opened the series on Saturday with six runs in the first three innings. After that point, the Wolves managed just three runs over the next 24 frames, which included a three-hit shutout in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
Fite's club returns to action on Thursday afternoon against Georgia Southwestern in a single game. It will continue the Wolves' early season battles against Peach Belt opponents before the Tiffin Dragons come to town next weekend for a three-game series.
