Slaven powers Sweep Sunday

Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves brought out the brooms on Sunday afternoon, completing a three-game sweep of the Tiffin Dragons with a 7-3 victory at Cole Field.

Senior starting pitcher #Jared Slaven# was the story of the day on Sunday, as the hurler pitched a complete game against the Dragons, scattering three runs on eight hits over the course of nine innings. Slaven was surgical in his delivery Sunday, striking out seven batters and allowing just one walk. He threw 128 pitches in the game, with over 70 percent landing for strikes.

Tiffin struck first in the game, scoring a run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. The Wolves responded in the bottom of the fourth with three runs.

In that inning, #Brett Wright# led off and was hit by a pitch. On the very next pitch, first baseman #Andy Marinelli# blasted a home run over the left field wall, giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead. Designated hitter #Justin Croft# then singled and worked his way to third. #Bill Redmon# delivered a two-out single to bring Croft home for the third run of the inning.

In the top of the fifth, the Dragons scored a run and threatened for much more. With the bases loaded and one out, Tiffin cleanup hitter Carlos Garcia worked the count to 2-2 and belted a line drive slightly to the left of Marinelli at first and it looked as though Garcia had come through with a bases-clearing double to the corner. Instead, Marinelli pounced on the line drive and beat the Tiffin runner back to the base at first, ending the inning with an unassisted double-play.

After Tiffin tied the game in the top of the seventh, Wright delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the frame that scored #Garrett May# and gave the Wolves the lead for good.

In the eighth, the Wolves put the game out of reach, first with a run-scoring single from center fielder #Danny Bodziak#. That was followed with a two-run single from #Brett Wright#, giving the Wolves a 7-3 lead heading into the ninth.

Slaven returned to the mound in that inning and retired the Dragons in order to close out the game.

Wright and #Stuart Drew# each went 2-for-3 in the game and shortstop #Bill Redmon# went 2-for-4 to lead the UWG offensive. The Wolves are set for a single game this week with Columbus State before a trip to Huntsville, AL this weekend for the first Gulf South Conference games of the season.
