Carrollton, GA - After taking the opening game of this weekend's Gulf South Conference series with Valdosta State, the West Georgia Wolves fell short in the final two games, losing Sunday 12-2 in seven innings to fall to 1-3 in GSC East play.
The Wolves won the first game of the series on Saturday afternoon 8-6, but that victory seemingly woke up the VSU bats, as the Blazers outscored West Georgia 23-7 over the final two games.
UWG starter #Jared Slaven# took his third loss of the season, going 3.2 innings while allowing seven runs on eight hits. #
Justin Key# and #
Walker White# entered in relief, but each fell victim to the hot VSU bats that pounded out 12 runs on 15 hits.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning, as the Blazers picked up their score on a sacrifice fly from Bobby Triglia while the Wolves played a little small ball.
#
Stuart Drew# led off with a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt from #
Brett Wright#. #
Andy Marinelli# grounded out to second base, moving Drew to third. After #
Justin Croft# was hit by a pitch, Drew scored on a wild pitch that tied the contest.
Both teams went down in order in the second and VSU put the game out of reach in the third on a two-run single from Joel Cardinal. The Wolves scored their last run of the series in the fourth as catcher #
David Buchanan# scored on a #
Nick Vinson# single.
Buchanan was the only player to have multiple hits in the game, as he was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Drew's hit gave him 43 hits on the season and he has hit safely in 19 of the Wolves' 21 games. His .538 batting average should lead the Gulf South Conference by nearly 50 points by the days' end.
The Wolves hit the road on Thursday, taking on Georgia Southwestern on Thursday afternoon followed by a trip to top-25 GSC opponent West Florida next weekend.
