Pensacola, FL – The West Georgia Wolves took their best shots at the fourth ranked West Florida Argonauts here Saturday. However, it wasn't enough to pull the upset in either game.
West Florida took both ends of their GSC East double header from the Wolves. The opener went the Argonauts' way, 6-4; the second game score was 4-1.
In the opener, the Wolves found themselves trailing by a 6-1 margin, before rallying in the final two innings. The eighth inning rally began with back-to-back hits from Garrett May and Danny Bodziak, and May later scored on a Trey Thompson ground out.
In the ninth, UWG whittled away at their four-run deficit. Justin Croft began the inning with a hit, followed by a David Buchanan double. Croft scored on a Keith Borger groundout, while Buchanan came home when a Bill Redmon ground ball was misplayed by the Argonauts' shortstop. However, the rally fizzled with Buchanan and Redmon in scoring position as Stuart Drew took a called third strike to end the game.
The Wolves had but six hits in the game, including two each from Croft and Buchanan. Walker White (0-2) worked the game's first four innings, and suffered the loss for West Georgia. Jason Postill, now 6-0, worked eight innings to pick up the win for West Florida.
Game two saw more struggles for the Wolves' offense. UWG had but four base hits: two from Andy Marinelli and one each from Buchanan and josh Whitehead.
The Wolves' lone run came in the top of the fifth. Buchanan led off with hit, followed by Redmon reaching on a botched sacrifice bunt. May then brought Buchanan home with a sacrifice fly to center, tying the game at 1-1.
West Florida answered back with three in the bottom of the inning to take control of the game.
Brandon Crumbley, who worked into the fifth, was the victim of the Argonauts' and suffered the loss to drop to 3-2 on the season.
Ben Hawkins earned the win for UWF.
