Wolves swept in Pensacola

Pensacola, FL – The West Florida Argonauts have this season ridden strong pitching to the number four spot in the NCAA Division II national rankings. For the West Georgia Wolves, unfortunately, that strong pitching was on display here all weekend as the Argos swept a three-game, GSC East Division series from UWG.

Sunday's finale saw West Florida jump to an early lead, and stay in control en route to the 8-1 victory. The Argonauts posted a three-spot in the bottom of the second, and then add a solo run in the third to take charge of the day's activities.

The Wolves' only run of the day came in the sixth inning. David Buchanan and Andy Marinelli led off the inning with back-to-back hits. Buchanan then scored as Justin Croft grounded into a double play.

Down 4-1, the Wolves were than back in the game. However, West Florida added an insurance run in the seventh inning, and then pushed across three more in the eighth.

West Georgia's attack was limited to but six hits on the afternoon, all singles. Marinelli, who went two-for-four, was the only UWG player with more than one base hit on the afternoon.

Jamie Sexton pitched the first seven innings and suffered the lost for West Georgia, dropping to 1-3 on the season. Daniel Vargas-Vila went the distance for West Florida, upping his record on the season to 5-1.

Sunday's defeat drops the Wolves to 8-17 on the season, 1-7 in GSC East play. West Florida improved to 24-4, 5-1 within the division.

West Georgia returns to action Tuesday night when former GSC East rival Lincoln Memorial visits Cole Field for a 6 p.m. contest. The Wolves and Railsplitters will play single games Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon (3:00).
