Carrollton, GA - Freshman #
Jamie Sexton# pitched a complete-game shutout and #
Stuart Drew# tied a single-game record for stolen bases as the West Georgia Wolves snapped an eight-game losing streak Tuesday night at Cole Field with an 8-0 victory over the Reinhardt Eagles.
The Wolves' last victory came on March 12 in Carrollton over Valdosta State and the complete game shutout from Sexton marked the first time this year that has happened. Drew swiped four stolen bases in addition to going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, three runs scored and two walks.
Drew was the catalyst for the first run of the game after he drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the third inning. He promptly stole second, then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error from the Reinhardt catcher.
The Wolves added two more runs in the fifth, then broke the game wide open in the seventh as Drew again started a rally with a single and a stolen base.
After two straight errors from Reinhardt, #
David Buchanan# scored Drew with the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly. #
Brett Wright# and #
Bradford Mattox# followed that with a pair of back-to-back, two-out doubles to score the final three runs of the inning and give the Wolves a commanding 8-0 advantage.
That was all Sexton would need, as the freshman hurler worked nine innings, scattering eight hits and striking out four batters. In addition to Drew, Wright and Mattox each went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Wolves return to Gulf South Conference action on Saturday at home against the North Alabama Lions. UNA comes into the weekend ranked 15th in the nation. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday afternoon.
