Livingston, AL - Pitching depth is key to any success that a baseball team may or may not have. West Georgia head coach
Skip Fite showed that he had just that Sunday afternoon in Livingston, as the Wolves used a come-from-behind effort against West Alabama to take an 11-8 win and win the series against the Tigers.
That pitching depth showed its face Sunday in the form of freshman #
Jamie Sexton#, who started his relief effort with one out left in the first inning, after starter #
Brandon Crumbley# had been knocked around for six runs.
What came next was nothing short of magical, as Sexton stopped the bleeding and worked 8 1/3 innings, scattering two runs on seven hits, allowing no walks and striking out nine en route to the victory.
But no comeback effort happens by pitching alone, as the Wolves pounded out 11 runs on 14 hits against the third best pitching staff in the Gulf South Conference, one that came into the weekend with an astounding 3.51 ERA.
Junior shortstop #
Garrett May# kicked the UWG scoring off in the top of the third, belting his sixth home run of the season on the second pitch of the inning. #
Stuart Drew# followed with a single, then stole second and third base.
After #
Andy Marinelli# was walked and #
Justin Croft# was hit by a pitch to load the bases, senior catcher #
David Buchanan# singled, bringing home Drew from third. Later in the inning, #
Bradford Mattox# singled, bringing home Marinelli and the Wolves were rolling.
The Wolves added another run in the fourth as May scored on a wild pitch, then West Georgia scored two runs each in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. In each inning, the runs were scored on a hit with two runners in scoring position.
In the sixth, Marinelli doubled home a pair of runs, followed by a two-run Drew single in the seventh. In the eighth, the two runs came home courtesy of a #
Trey Thompson# single. Marinelli closed out the scoring in the game in the ninth with an RBI single, completing the sweep.
In contrast, Sexton settled down and allowed just one hit through the final four innings. In fact, Sexton allowed five of his seven hits in the first two innings, then threw two-hit ball for the remainder of the game.
Five different Wolves had multiple hits on the day, led by Drew and Marinelli with three hits each. Buchanan, Thompson and #
Brett Wright# each had two hits in the game.
The win assures West Georgia of a winning record in the current 10-game road swing, as the Wolves are 6-3 in that span after Sunday's game nine. UWG concludes the road trip on Tuesday evening at Reinhardt before returning home next weekend against Alabama-Huntsville.
