No. 15 Lions outlast West Georgia in Carrollton

Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves fell in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday, losing 11-4 in the opener and 5-0 in the second game to the No. 15 North Alabama Lions at Cole Field.

Despite the lopsided scores, the Lions powered seven runs on the board in the first inning of the day and then coasted from there, holding off West Georgia's offensive charge in the late innings of the first game.

The Wolves' first run of the day came in the bottom of the fourth, as senior catcher #David Buchanan# brought home freshman center fielder #Danny Bodziak# on a sacrifice fly. The run was unearned, as Bodziak reached on an error, but the Wolves were on the board.

In the seventh inning, West Georgia struck for three more runs, as #Brett Wright# and #Nick Vinson# opened the frame with a pair of singles, giving the Wolves runners at first and third with no outs.

Two batters later, #Justin Croft# brought Wright home with a single, followed by an RBI single from both #Bill Redmon# and Bodziak to close out the scoring on the day for the Wolves and bring West Georgia to within striking distance at 8-4.

But in the final innings of the opener, the Lions flexed their muscle with three runs to put the game out of reach for West Georgia.

The Wolves had 13 hits in the game, with Croft leading the way with a 3-for-4 effort. Bodziak, #Andy Marinelli#, Wright and #Bradford Mattox# each had two hits in the game. Freshman #Walker White# gave up all seven runs in the first inning to take the loss. #Justin Key# and #Anthony Winborne# held things close on the mound for the final eight innings.

In the second game, it was the Johnny Hornbuckle show for the Lions, as the UNA starting pitcher tossed a complete-game three-hitter to hand the Wolves their 21st loss of the season. UWG starter #Brandon Crumbley# gave up three runs in the first two innings to take his third loss of the season.

The same two teams will meet in the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Cole Field.
