Jackson, TN – Though they lost a heartbreaker in game one of a double header here Saturday, the West Georgia Wolves bounced back strong in the nightcap.
UWG put a seven-spot on the board in the top of the first, and led throughout in a 10-3 victory over the Lambuth Eagles. The bounce back win came on the heels of a heartbreaking, 14-13 setback in Saturday's opening game.
The benefactor of the Wolves' offensive outburst in the nightcap was junior right-hander Alex Wilson. He worked the game's first six innings, picking up his first victory of the season.
While the pitching was solid in the game two win, the opposite was true in the day's first game as Lambuth vaulted to an early, 9-3 lead. A very solid, four-inning relief outing from Brandon Crumbley not only kept the Wolves in the game, it put them in position to get the win.
Sparked by a three-run homer off the bat of shortstop Garrett May, West Georgia erased a six-run deficit and carried a 13-9 lead into the bottom of the ninth. However, coach Skip Fite saw everything that could wrong happen in the final frame.
“We made a couple of errors, gave up a walk and a couple of flares,” said UWG's coach. “From there it just snowballed on us and we couldn't stop it.”
Beyond May, UWG had other big offensive performances during the twin bill. Second baseman Stuart Drew and first baseman Andy Marinelli each had five hits and a pair doubles in the games.
Saturday's sweep leaves the Wolves at 12-23 on the season, while the Eagles' record is 10-25.
West Georgia and Lambuth close their three-game, weekend series here Sunday afternoon. The game is expected to mark the return of senior Jarod Slaven to the hill. The right-hander form Suwanee has been out for the last month with injury.
Sunday's first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
