Carrollton, GA – The UWG Wolves Baseball team started their season in a below freezing, miserable windy afternoon at Cole Field. but it was worth it, as the Wolves walked away from the frigid landscape with a 14-6 win over the Augusta State Jaguars.
Junior hurler #Max Aeschilmann# picked up the win for the Wolves, going four innings, giving up three runs on one hit with five strikeouts. Leading the Wolves offensively was center fielder #Gabe Herman#, who was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI in his debut at UWG.
Herman made things interesting early, reaching on an error by the Augusta State shortstop, then stealing second before a strikeout ended the threat. He also started the biggest rally of the game in his next at-bat in the third inning.
The junior led off the third with a single, then promptly stole second, giving All-American #
Stuart Drew# the opportunity for an RBI. The senior took full advantage, belting a single to center and bringing Herman home for the first run of the 2012 season.
Drew continued the trend by stealing second, then moved over on a flyout to right. Catcher #
Galen Smith# brought Drew home with an infield single and the Wolves were rolling. When the dust cleared at the end of the inning, West Georgia had plated six runs and were in full command of the contest.
In the meantime, Aeschilmann was working hard on the mound, tossing a no-hitter through three innings. In the fourth, the junior struggled with his control, hitting two batters and walking in a third before ASU delivered a two-run single to cut the West Georgia lead to three at 6-3.
The Wolves responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, effectively putting the game out of reach for the Jaguars.
Considering the cold weather, the Wolves had 13 hits as a team, including three players with multiple hits. In addition to Herman, #
Evan Hester# and #
Justin Croft# each had two hits and an RBI.
It was a typical early-season game for both teams, as Augusta State had five errors to the Wolves' two. The win was a bit of vindication for
Skip Fite, who picked up his first win over his old team Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves will finish up the series tomorrow at Cole Field with a double header against Augusta State with the first pitch scheduled for 12:30 in the afternoon. #
Cody Skinner# will be taking the mound in the first game and #
Seth McClure# will get the ball in game two.
