Carrollton, GA - The UWG baseball team came into Thursday's game against their second straight Peach Belt Conference opponent, North Georgia, who is 4-2 on the season so far and held a national ranking in the 2011. UWG (2-2) gave the Saints (5-2) a great run and came up 90 feet short of tying the game in the bottom of the ninth, losing 3-2.
The Wolves mustered only four hits on the day against some good relief pitching from North Georgia. One of those hits produced half of UWG's runs as a first-inning homerun by senior first baseman #
Andy Marinelli# tied the game at 1-1.
The Saints would go on to score two more runs in the top of the fourth, which would be all the North Georgia pitching staff would need. The Wolves answered in the bottom of the fourth by scoring a run on a #
Garrett May# double down the left field line; crossing the plate was shortstop #
Dylan Coleman#. The Wolves were done scoring for the night but would threaten three more times in the bottom of the seventh, eighth, and ninth.
#Max Aeschilmann# picked up his first loss for the Wolves after going seven innings and giving up eight hits, but only two earned runs. Aeschilmann also struck out seven Saints on the day to run his total to 12 on the season. Sophomore #
Jamie Sexton# came in to relieve Aeschilmann in the eighth inning and pitched two great innings for the Wolves, picking up a strikeout and giving up no hits and no runs.
Helping out the Wolves offensively was #
Stuart Drew#, Marinelli, Coleman and #
Garrett May# all with a hit each. Drew got on base three out of four at-bats drawing two walks along with his single. Runs were batted in by May's double and Marinelli's first inning bomb to left-center.
The Wolves will host Tiffin (OH) Saturday morning, February 18
th, at 10:00 AM at Cole Field, a change in the original schedule, as the game was originially set for 12:30.
