Wolves fall in extra innings

Montevallo, AL - It was a day of the long ball in Montevallo, Ala., as seven homeruns combined from theWest Georgia Wolves and Montevallo Falcons. However, it was the seventh homerun that was the difference-maker as it gave Montevallo a 10-8 walk-off victory.

The Wolves tossed the first punch of the game in the top of the second inning where they put up two runs; one of them a solo homer by senior third baseman #Garrett May#. West Georgia put another two runs on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth courtesy of a May two-run bomb. The Falcons answered in the bottom of the fourth by scoring two runs and making the score 4-3 with UWG on top heading into the top of the fifth.

After the Falcons had a three-run inning in the bottom of the fifth, the Wolves answered in the top of the sixth with Junior #Brett Wright#'s two-run homerun, the first of his career, bringing home #Justin Croft#. The Wolves and Falcons traded runs in the top and bottom of the seventh inning and the score was knotted at 7-7.

#Galen Smith# led off the top of the eighth with an infield single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch and was moved over on a fly ball from May. Smith scored when center fielder #Gabe Herman# reached base on an error by the Falcon second baseman, putting the Wolves up by one run going into the bottom of the eighth. The Falcons were held scoreless in the bottom half and so were the Wolves in the top of the ninth.

After two straight hits, a wild pitch, and a sac fly, the Falcons tied the game in the bottom of the ninth and sent the game to extra innings.

One extra inning is all Montevallo would need. The Falcons ended the game on a walk-off homerun winning 10-8.

The Wolves put together 12 hits against the Falcons today. Four UWG players had multi-hit games. The Wolves with two or more hits were May, senior #Andy Marinelli#, junior #Dylan Coleman#, and Smith with three hits. West Georgia had eight runs on the day, with five of those runs were by homeruns; two by May and one by Wright.

Freshman #Marquise Vialet# started for the Wolves, giving up only three runs and striking out two in four innings of work. Receiving the loss for the Wolves was reliever #Jamie Sexton#, who went 2 2/3 innings, giving up five hits and three runs.
