Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves picked up a split on the first day of action against Northern Kentucky, blasting the Norse 11-7 in the first game, followed by a 5-3 loss in extra innings in the nightcap.
Wolves take Game 1 against Norse
The West Georgia Wolves put on a hitting and defensive clinic against the Northern Kentucky Norse in game number one of the doubleheader at Cole Field winning by a score of 11-7. The game was a lot more one-sided than the score showed. The Wolves were up 11-3 going into the top of the ninth inning and some sloppy pitching and a few hits gave the Norse some hope but #
Randall Wright# ended the rally for Northern Kentucky.
The win today for the Wolves went to #Max Aeschilmann#, (2-1) who went seven innings, giving up two runs and striking out seven Norse. Aeschilmann has started three games for the Wolves this season (18 innings) and has only given up four earned runs and has struck out 18 batters.
The Wolves generated 16 hits today against the Norse. #
Dylan Coleman#, #
Galen Smith#, and #Gabe Herman# all had three hits each and combined for eight of the 11 RBI's on the team. Other Wolves with multi-hits were #
Andy Marinelli#, #
Evan Hester#, and #
Jayke Graham#.
This win puts the Wolves at 5-3 on the season.
Wolves Fall Again in Extras
The second game to this doubleheader today was a completely different story for the Wolves. UWG started slow offensively and nothing ever really picked up. The Wolves scored one run in the first, one run in the third, and their last run of the game in the bottom of the fifth eventually falling 5-3.
This game, just like the Montevallo game earlier this week, only took one extra inning to decide a victor as the Norse scored two runs in their first extra inning, which would be all they would need. One of the Norse runs in the eighth came off a failed suicide squeeze that somehow worked in Northern Kentucky's favor as catcher Smith couldn't get a handle on the ball allowing the opposing base-runner to steal home.
#
Cody Skinner# started for the Wolves today going five innings and giving up six hits and three runs while striking out four. #
Jamie Sexton# came in to relieve Skinner and pitched great up until the top of the eighth where he allowed two hits and gave up two runs.
#
Stuart Drew#, for the Wolves, scored all three runs and had two hits to keep West Georgia in this game. Smith, #
Brett Wright#, and #
Garrett May# also had hits in the second game.
The Wolves will finish up this series Sunday, February 26
th, at 1:00 PM at Cole Field. The starting pitcher for West Georgia will be #
Seth McClure#.
