Carrollton, GA - The UWG Wolves traveled to Columbus State to take on the Cougars for a late afternoon game. West Georgia struggled against the CSU pitching staff and never got anything going offensively and left Columbus, GA. with an 11-2 loss.
Columbus State (12-3) came into today's game with 12 wins in their first 15 games. Some of these games the Cougars won 33-0 and 19-0; a picture of why they are ranked seventh in the nation in Division II.
Freshman #
Marquise Vialet# got the start for the Wolves today. Vialet did not last long on the mound going one and two-thirds innings giving up three hits, three runs, and walking two. #
Chase Riemer# came in to relieve Vialet in the top of the second inning getting a groundout on the first batter to end the inning. Riemer would go on to pitch the third inning and give up two hits and two runs, making the score 5-0 Cougars.
The Wolves would conclude the game by sending three more pitchers to the mound to finish out the contest. These three pitchers combined for four innings of work, nine hits, and six earned runs.
The Wolves' defense continued to shine through the offensive woes, as UWG went another game without committing an error making it the Wolves fifth straight game without an error.
The Wolves offensively today didn't get much going. The two runs scored by UWG were produced by back-to-back homeruns from third-baseman #
Garrett May# and left-fielder #
Evan Hester#. May has hit four homeruns now in the past five games for the Wolves.
The Wolves will start up conference play with a doubleheader at Cole Field Saturday, March 3 at noon. The Christian Brothers Buccaneers (6-6) will be the opponent for the weekend. The series will conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m.
