Wolves Split with West Alabama

Carrollton, GA - For the first road series of the year in Gulf South Conference play, the West Georgia Wolves traveled to Livingston, Ala., to take on the West Alabama Tigers. The Wolves and Tigers split the first day, with UWA taking the opener 4-1 and West Georgia taking the nightcap 13-3.

Game 1
The Wolves offense didn't show up until the top of the ninth inning where UWG scored a run on two hits by #Galen Smith# and #Adam Whitlock#, but it was not enough, as West Alabama handed West Georgia their first conference loss of the season by a score of 4-1.

Max Aeschilmann (3-2) got the start for West Georgia today. Aeschilmann has shut down every team he has faced this season, but today he gave up nine hits and three earned runs while striking out four. #Blake McLemore# relieved Aeschilmann in the seventh inning and finished out the game, giving up only one hit.

The Wolves usually solid defense, allowed three errors on the day. Heading into the weekend series, the Wolves led the GSC with a .980 fielding percentage.

#Galen Smith# led the Wolves at the plate, going 2-for-4 and knocking in the only run of the game for UWG. Other Wolves who contributed with a hit were #Evan Hester#, #Stuart Drew#, #Adam Whitlock#, and #Brett Wright#.

Game 2
The UWG Baseball team rebounded from the Game 1 loss to West Alabama with a 13-3 win in Livingston. #Cody Skinner# pitched a complete game to lead the Wolves to their 12th win of the season.

Skinner went seven innings tonight giving up three runs, but all three runs were unearned due to miscues on defense. Skinner walked one batter on the night and struck out four. The win improves Skinner's record to 4-0 on the season and makes him one of the few pitchers in the Gulf South Conference with four wins on the year.

The Wolves' offense awoke in the second half of the doubleheader, putting up 14 hits and driving in 13 runs. Freshmen #Tanner Drennan# led the Wolves with a 3-for-4 night, driving in two runs and scoring one run. #Garrett May# knocked in three runs while going 2-for-4 while scoring a run also. #Stuart Drew# and #Evan Hester# recorded two hits on the night while scoring three combined runs. Right fielder #Brett Wright# drove in two runs for the Wolves also on the night.

West Georgia improves to 12-6 on the season now and 4-1 in Gulf South Conference play. The rubber game of the series is set for Sunday, March 11 against the Tigers at 1 p.m.
