Wolves rally falls short in Milledgeville

Carrollton, GA - Facing one of the more formidable teams in the southeast Wednesday afternoon, the West Georgia Wolves went toe-to-toe with Georgia College, but fell just short as the Bobcats handed the Wolves a 5-4 loss in Milledgeville.

The game was a familiar tune to games that West Georgia lost earlier in the year, as the Wolves had the game-tying run on second in the form of #Tanner Drennen#, only to come up just short in the scoring column.

West Georgia started quickly in this one, as the first three UWG batters reached base without putting the ball in fair play. #Stuart Drew# led off the game with a walk, followed by Drennen being hit by a pitch and an #Evan Hester# walk to load the bases. First baseman #Adam Whitlock# followed Hester's walk with a single, bringing home Drew and Drennen for a 2-0 UWG lead.

The Wolves weren't done, as #Garrett May# delivered another single, bringing home Hester and giving starter #Alex Wilson# a three-run cushion before he hit the mound.

Wilson was solid through the first four innings of the contest, allowing just two hits in that span and keeping the Bobcats away from home plate to preserve the 3-0 UWG advantage. But in the fifth, the Bobcats touched up Wilson for three runs and that was the end of his day, as head coach Skip Fite brought in #Blake McLemore#  for relief.

In the seventh, the Bobcats took the lead for the first time on the day, scoring two runs off of sophomore #Jamie Sexton#. After the runs, Sexton settled down and didn't allow anything for Georgia College in the eighth.

Drew started a rally in the top of the ninth, opening the inning with a single and moving to third on a pair of passed balls. Three batters later, Whitlock lofted a ball into left field that brought home Drew and put Drennen on second. But May flied out to right to end the threat and the contest at 5-4 with Georgia College on top.

Drew and Drennen each went 3-for-4 in the game with Drew scoring two runs and Drennen adding one. Whitlock was 2-for-4 on the day with three RBI. Wilson had a solid day, allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts in four innings of work.

West Georgia returns to Gulf South Conference play this weekend with one of the toughest home challenges of the year thus far, as No. 5 North Alabama comes to town for a three-game set on Saturday and Sunday. Both days start at 1 p.m., with Saturday's contest coming as a doubleheader and Sunday's as a single game. Live stats will not be available this weekend, but the game will be broadcast on The WOLF Internet Radio.
