Carrollton, GA - In doubleheader action Saturday afternoon, the UWG baseball team took on conference foe and fifth-ranked North Alabama. The Wolves came out of the box hot in game one of the doubleheader, winning by a score of 5-2. But the Lions answered the call in game two by splitting the day with a 7-2 victory.
In game one, head coach
Skip Fite handed the ball to starter #
Seth McClure#, who brought with him a 4-0 record to go with a 3.00 earned run average. McClure battled the Lions early on, scattering six hits and walking five. He did allow two runs, although they were both unearned.
Despite the success, McClure was a bit wild and handed the ball over to #Chase Reimer# after 84 pitches and 4 1/3 innings. Reimer pitched a stellar 4 2/3 innings, allowing only one hit while striking our four and only giving up one free pass. Reimer recorded the win on just 60 pitches and improved his overall record to 2-0.
With only five hits in game one the Wolves were able to take advantage of sloppy defense by the Lions. #
Galen Smith# led UWG offensively going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The fourth inning was a circus of an inning. After UNA put up two runs in their half of the inning, the Wolves were able to answer back with four of their own on just one hit. In the inning there were wild pitches, passed balls, and errors that gave the Wolves everything they needed to take the lead.
Johnny Hornbuckle received the tough loss in his eight innings of work as he allowed three earned runs.
The win marks the first over a top-five team for the Wolves since February 2005 when they defeated Columbus State 7-2.
Game 2
The second game was completely different than the first as the Lions flexed their muscle, showing why they are ranked in the top-five. Opposing pitcher Michael Watkins was on cruise control for most of the game going 6 2/3 innings and allowing two earned runs on eight hits.
The Wolves were baffled by the UNA pitcher until the bottom of the seventh inning where they put together four hits for two runs and bounced Watkins from the game.
#
Cody Skinner# took the mound for UWG and struggled for the first time this season, allowing four runs to the tune of six hits. He was eventually replaced by a run of pitchers as #
Dustin Brantley#, #
David Birch#, and #
Randall Wright# finished the game for the Wolves. Wright turned in a solid three innings of work, allowing one earned run on only two hits.
Offensively the Wolves were powered by #
Evan Hester# who went 3-for-4 with one RBI. #
Keith Borger# came off the bench and was 2-for-2 in his two late at bats.
The game looked all but over in the bottom of the seventh. The Lions got two quick outs when the Wolves' bats woke up. With two runs in and the bases loaded the Lions were forced to bring in Brantley Claunch. #
Adam Whitlock# laced a line drive up the middle that had a chance to get down but was eventually caught by the centerfielder to end the game.
After today's games the Wolves now stand at 14-8 including a 6-2 GSC record. The rubber game of the series will be tomorrow at 1 p.m at Cole Field.
