Carrollton, GA - The North Alabama Lions shook off the sting of a loss in the opening game of the series against West Georgia, then took control, winning 2-of-3 in the Gulf South Conference weekend at Cole Field, including Sunday's 12-0 walkover that flirted with perfection.
The story of the day was North Alabama starter Chad Boughner, who had the Wolves off balance from the 1 p.m. first pitch till he closed out the game on a #
Garrett May# pop out. Coming into the game Boughner was 3-2 with a 3.38 earned run average. He mixed up his pitches and pounded the strike zone which led to six strikeouts.
Boughner was helped out by solid defense behind him and a ruthless offense that produced 12 runs on 16 hits. Most of the damage was done in a seven-run fifth inning where UNA broke the game wide open. The finishing touches on the fifth was a two-run homer by Josh Cyr, who was a beast at the plate all weekend.
#
Max Aeschlimann# got the nod for UWG and lasted only four innings. The Lions ripped Aeshlimann for nine hits and seven earned runs. He handed the ball over to #
Alex Wilson# in the fifth, who only lasted a third of an inning giving up three runs on three hits. #
Alex Allen# finished out the fifth and #
Jarrod Parker# pitched a scoreless sixth.
As the Wolves came up for their last hacks all eyes were focused on Boughner as he went for perfection. After two quick outs, left fielder #
Evan Hester# stepped to the plate. The count got to 1-2 and Boughner was one pitch away from a perfect game, but Hester had other ideas.
On the next pitch Hester laced a linedrive that dropped in front of the right fielder, breaking up the perfect game. #
Adam Whitlock# followed Hester with a single of his own advancing Hester to third but it would prove to be the last hit of the game as May popped out to end the game.
The Wolves will now head to Fairfield, Alabama to take on Miles College on March 20 at 1 p.m.
