Carrollton, GA - In their first trip to New Orleans to face-off with the Privateers, the UWG baseball team split the first day of the two-day series on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-3 in the opener followed by a huge 9-2 victory in the nightcap.
The two ends of the doubleheader could not have been more different than they were, as the opener featured a UNO offensive that pounded out 10 hits while allowing only six to the Wolves. In the nightcap, the story was West Georgia's junior starter #
Cody Skinner#, who slammed the door shut early on the Privateers, allowing just five hits while the Wolves had a hit parade with 15 hits.
The opener saw West Georgia begin the series off-balance at the plate, as Wolves went hitless through the first six innings. The first three innings were a pitcher's duel between UWG starter #
Seth McClure# and New Orleans hurler Stone Speer, as the two teams were scoreless in that span. But in the fourth and fifth, the wheels came of for West Georiga, as UNO put five runs on the board in those two innings.
The Wolves put some pressure on in the top of the ninth inning, scoring two runs, but it was too little, too late as New Orleans handed West Georgia a 5-3 loss.
McClure took the loss, his second of the season, allowing four runs on eight hits in four innings of work. #Chase Reimer# took over in the fourth inning and went the rest of the way, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four. Junior #
Brett Wright# was a bright spot at the plate, scoring a run in a 3-for-3 performance. Sophomore #
Justin Croft# added a pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning, a two-run shot to right field.
In the second game, senior #
Stuart Drew# kicked things off with a single to lead off the game. After a one-out walk to #
Evan Hester#, senior #
Adam Whitlock# advanced the runners with a groundout. #
Tanner Drennen# cleared the bases with a two-out single, giving Skinner a 2-0 head start.
The Privateers picked up a run in the bottom of the first, but the UWG bats were wide awake at that point, as the Wolves added two more runs in the top of the second and three more in the third.
Drew and Wright were the culprits for the bulk of the first seven runs for the Wolves, especially in the second and third. In both innings, Drew had an RBI single, accounting for two of the UWG runs. Wright had an RBI single in the second inning and blew the game wide open in the third, picking up two RBI on a two-out triple that scored Drew and #
Jayke Graham#.
Sophomore #
Keith Borger# closed out the scoring in the top of the sixth with a two-run single. Whitlock and Drennen kicked off the inning with back-to-back one-out singles. After Croft moved the runners over, Borger laced a single into center, scoring the final runs of the game.
Skinner worked 6.1 innings on the afternoon, picking up his fifth win of the season by allowing five hits and striking out three. #
Randall Wright# finished off the game by getting the final two outs of the game.
Drew, Drennen and Graham all went 3-for-4 to lead the Wolves offensively in the contest. Drew and Graham scored two runs each and Drew, Drennen and Borger all had two RBI on the afternoon. Eight of the Wolves' nine starters in the lineup had a hit in the contest.
The same two teams close out the series on Sunday afternoon with the rubber game at 1 p.m.
