West Georgia takes rubber game over UNO

Carrollton, GA - The hit parade that started in game two on Saturday continued in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon, as the UWG baseball team pounded out 19 hits against New Orleans in the series finale, propelling the Wolves to a 12-6 victory and also a series victory, West Georgia's third of the season.

Sunday marked the midpoint of the conference season for the Wolves and West Georgia's overall record stands at 17-11, including an 8-4 mark in Gulf South Conference play. The Wolves have won three of the first four conference series and won a single game in the fourth against then #5 North Alabama. The eight conference wins marks the most since the 2004 season for UWG, when West Georgia went 9-11 in GSC play.

The Wolves opened up the scoring in Sunday's game in the top of the second, as #Tanner Drennen# led off the inning with a double, followed quickly by an RBI single from #Justin Croft#. Four batters later, with two outs and two runners on, senior #Stuart Drew# singled, scoring both runners and giving the Wolves a 3-0 lead.

New Orleans answered in the bottom of the second with two runs, then tied the game in the bottom of the third with another run plated, making the score 3-3 heading into the top of the fourth.

Sophomore #Keith Borger# opened the fourth inning with a single, followed by a base hit from #Garrett May#. #Jayke Graham# moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt, bringing Drew back to the plate. The senior continued his hot streak with another two-run single, putting UWG on top by a 5-3 count.

The UWG leftys started the scoring in the top of the fifth frame, as first baseman #Adam Whitlock# led off and was hit by a pitch. He stole second and the catcher's throw was wild, allowing Whitlock to move to third and giving the Wolves a runner on third with one out. The other lefty in the UWG lineup, Croft, singled and brought Whitlock home for a 6-3 UWG lead.

But the Wolves weren't done there, as a Drew single and a double each from #Evan Hester# and Drennen brought home two runs in the top of the sixth inning, putting West Georgia in front for good at 8-5.

The UWG pitching staff took over at that point, as #Randall Wright# and #Alex Allen# worked the final three innings of the contest, allowing no runs and no hits in that span to slam the door shut on the Privateers. UNO scored all six runs on the afternoon on starter #Max Aeschilmann#, who gave up 11 hits and struck out two. Wright had three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work and Allen closed out the ninth by fanning two New Orleans hitters.

Just for good measure, the Wolves added four more runs in the final three innings to bring the final score to 12-6. The Wolves outscored UNO 21-8 in the final two games after opening the series with a 5-3 loss.

Drennen and Drew each had four hits on the day and Drew had four RBI and two runs scored. Drennen had two RBI and two runs scored on the day. Croft was 3-for-6 in the game, starting at the DH spot. He had a run scored and four RBI to aid in the cause.

The Wolves are home all next week, hosting Columbus State at 5 p.m. on Wednesday followed by a home Gulf South Conference series against Alabama-Huntsville next weekend.
